Thank you in advance for any help. Criteria: * Text-based flashcards * Looks and works similarly to the ones in Quizlet or H5P ? word on one side with definition on the other side. * I don?t need to be able to add images, but it?s ok if it?s image capable ? should have the ability to add alt-text if it accepts images. * AI generated audio would be a nice add for UDL but is not required ? I probably won?t have the time to add my own audio unless the audio is inline and can be recorded right into the flashcard as I would prefer not to mess around with having to record elsewhere and upload audio files. * Additional study modes like Quizlet has (examples: matching and gravity games) would be nice for UDL, but are not required ? any additional modes should be screen reader accessible if available. * H5P Dialog cards do not have additional study modes. * Accessible for a screen reader and screen magnifier, easy to operate/control/flip with a mouse or keyboard-only. * I would prefer to be able to embed the flashcards in a page in Canvas using the HTML editor, so participants do not have to go outside of the Canvas 101 classroom. * Ad free would be awesome. * The free version of Quizlet is not ad free. * I believe embedded H5P Dialog Cards would be ad free. * I would prefer embedded content that does not require a paid LTI to be installed so that it is easier to share with our colleges ? free is always nice. ? * My understanding is that the embedded H5P Dialog Cards would require a paid LTI to be installed to share the content. [A gavel and the accessibility icon.] In April, the Department of Justice issued its final rule for Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (?ADA?). These updates require state and local governments, including Higher Ed institutions, to make sure that their services, programs, and activities are accessible to people with disabilities. The final rule will be in effect as of June 24, 2024, and institutions will have two to three years to comply with the newly updated technical standards of Title II, depending on their respective populations. I thought folks here would be interested in this functionality. The WordToEPUB add-in for Word, which is freely available from the DAISY Consortium, also has a EPUB to Word function. After installing WordToEPUB: https://daisy.org/activities/software/wordtoepub/ When on Windows File explorer, and being on a EPUB file, the context menu will show EPUB to word. This will launch the utility. I tested with simple documents and with more complex publications. I also tested with EPUB that has MathML. It worked great. I did have a fail with a title that had videos. Also, WordToEPUB has the Word to HTML functionality. Of course, the WordTOEPUB produces great, clean EPUB. I thought there were a variety of functions for this. It might be easier to fix alt text or add long descriptions to a Word docx and then remake the EPUB. Also, having it in Word could allow for other functions. I tested with EPUB from Bookshare. If they offered access to content outside of flipbooks, that could be considered an accommodation. For instance, you can highlight some of the text so it looks like it should be accessible, but try accessing the text with a screenreader. In my case, I can navigate around the content, but not into it. Navigating by headers doesn?t help since the focus isn?t on the flipbook, but on the whole page in the background. This could be fixed with CSS values. In the flipbook, I do not have access to my right click tools, which is replaced by a flipbook toolbar. I can?t get it to use my computer TTS. If I use Speechify, it only reads the content in the background and not the content I?m looking at. This can?t be fixed with CSS. Can these books be loaded into e-ink devices like the BOOX? Keep in mind that the NPRM requiring state entities to adhere to WCAG 2.1 lvl AA by April 2026 will not apply to vendors we purchase from. Vendors do not receive state or federal funding, nor do they have a public place to congregate. I highly doubt these are viewable, or even performs a reflow of content, on mobile devices. Delve into contemporary approaches to embedding digital accessibility and inclusive design principles in university settings. Dr Sarah Fielding from the University of Southampton shares insights into their transformative journey towards the "Blackboard Universal Standards." Tracy Galvin and Jen McParland from Ulster University introduce "Accessibility THRIVES," a mnemonic for accessible content creation, while Robert Farmer showcases University of Northampton's award-winning mobile-friendly Ultra course. Plus, uncover the curious case of Freddie Meowcury with Rachelle Emily Rawlinson from Durham University. Join us in the International Ally User Group on Thursday 23 May 2024 at 07:00 PDT / 10:00 EDT / 15:00 BST / 16:00 CEST / 17:00 TRT / 18:00 GST. # Session synopses ## A baseline for inclusion? Dr Sarah Fielding, Team Manager: Digital Learning, University of Southampton ?The University of Southampton (UoS) has embarked on a three-year strategic project to migrate from Blackboard Original to Ultra. This major change project is not a ?lift and shift? of content, but a rethink of our approach to the student experience. I?m going to take you through our journey towards developing the UoS "Blackboard Universal Standards" and how we hope they will form a baseline for inclusive practice?. ## Accessibility THRIVES: Developing an acronym to raise awareness of key accessibility practices for digital content creation Tracy Galvin - Lecturer in Higher Education Practice and Jen McParland - Lecturer in Higher Education Practice, Ulster University ?The creators of the "Accessibility THRIVES" acronym will discuss why they designed it as a mnemonic to support university staff in designing accessible digital content. They will also highlight how the acronym complemented a toolkit they co-designed to promote inclusive and accessible teaching and learning ?by design?, underpinned by Universal Design for Learning principles. Finally, they will highlight how their decision to release it as an Open Educational Resource (OER) influenced other institutions to reuse and remix it for their own audiences?. ## Developing accessible, inclusive, mobile-friendly Ultra courses Robert Farmer, Learning Technology Manager, University of Northampton ?Developing accessible, inclusive, mobile-friendly Ultra courses - As part of UON?s move to Ultra courses, the University?s Learning Technology Team were keen answer the question ?What does a good Ultra course look like?? by creating an exemplar Ultra course for our staff. During this session, we?ll take you through our course, which won an Anthology Exemplary Course Award in 2023, outlining the ways we tried to make it accessible, inclusive, and mobile-friendly?. Attendees will be given access to an export of the exemplar course. ## The curious case of Freddie Meowcury Rachelle Emily Rawlinson, Senior Learning Designer, Durham University ?How does Universal Design for Learning, a pesky feline and a clutter of first year students lead to a more inclusive and playful experience of transitioning into university? This presentation will reveal the answer. Come along and find out more about Freddie, the pesky feline and chief trouble causer responsible for higher engagement in the Transition to Higher Education course at Durham University?. While this month?s meeting will touch on both Ally and Blackboard Ultra, the principles will be applicable whichever learning management system you use at your institution. Find sign-up and joining details on the Ally Community site: https://usergroup.ally.ac/content/perma?id=62460 Hope to see you on Thursday 23 May 2024. The problem begins with the PDF and PDF/UA standards themselves, which were improved only recently with version 2 and are not yet fully adopted and in play by the industry. Embedding an a/v player inside the PDF file itself is troublesome, as well. Instead, we recommend placing a static image in the EPUB/PDF that is hyperlinked to a permanent URL location where the video can be viewed with whatever the end user has set up in their device or browser. If there is a publisher relationship already, it might not take as long as you think. Of course if it is a title that is not available from the publisher and Bookshare has to chop and scan, it will take a long time and the quality also suffers. So, go to the website and make the request. Or have your student provide you with their copy of the book. Same process for either method, rebind the book with comb binding and return to bookstore or student. When making a request for a book in electronic format, suggest you specify what format you/your student need: MSW docx, pdf, rtf, etc. Definitely not the advice you asked for, but perhaps it will help. Since dyslexia is a language-based learning disability comprising a range of functional limitations, students may need tools beyond just text-to-speech. In addition to reading difficulties like decoding and fluency, it can impact reading comprehension, spelling, other aspects of writing (like word retrieval and editing), taking notes, math, and more. Each of these functional limitations might call for different tool features. Since you?re asking about tools a dyslexic student might use with Google Docs, I suggest you start with Chrome & Edge extensions that help with reading and writing. Take a look at the AT Toolbox page on my website (http://www.techpotential.net/attoolbox) and consider the Chrome-based tools under the sections: * Simple text-to-speech (TTS) * Read, Write, and Study Software Suites * Assorted Reading Supports * Assorted Writing Supports * Math & Science Notation Please note that two of the most capable suites of literacy tools for students with dyslexia ? Texthelp?s Read&Write, and Don Johnston?s Snap&Read and Co:Writer ? are undergoing a huge transition this summer as the two companies near completion of their two-year-long effort to merge their products and capabilities: https://academy.texthelp.com/lp/read-write-changes/ https://learningtools.donjohnston.com/2024/04/cowriter-and-or-snapread-customer-faq/ The Texthelp Academy (https://academy.texthelp.com) is the best place to quickly explore everything these tools can do (look for the Feature Tour under each product). As for providing access to Microsoft 365 alongside Google Docs, et al, I have had a few students who needed access to both (obviously, there needs to be a justification, usually based on particular necessary features). If the student is using Chrome or Edge as their main browser in order to leverage those Chrome extensions, they can simply sign into a Microsoft account that gives them access to Word, OneNote, and a few other MS tools for free: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/free-productivity-apps Hope this helps! - Shelley _____________________________ Shelley Haven ATP, RET Assistive Technology Consultant www.TechPotential.net On TuesdayMay 14, at 3:37 AM, Karen McCall via athen-list > wrote: Morning!
