I've put together a video presentation with a corresponding written transcript that cover four scenarios based on my experience of using Copilot and similar tools in my role for the following tasks over the past six months: * Converting captions into a formatted transcript. * Writing alternative text for images. * Converting a podcast in mp3 format into a formatted transcript with speaker attribution. * Creating sample content for use in accessibility remediation workshops. In the presentation, I'll introduce each concept and explain why it's important. I will demonstrate Copilot in use and share the prompts I created. I also provide some introductory information about Copilot for those who have not used it before. Of course, there are concerns around bias and the impact of the climate of generative AI. I'll raise those in the presentation. The presentation concludes with a set of questions for Higher Education institutions to consider as they start to use generative AI for digital accessibility workflows. While these scenarios are fairly niche and limited, I hope that others will continue the conversation and share their experiences. Happy to receive feedback and hope to learn how you have been using tools like this in the digital accessibility sphere. I'm working with a blind student studying statistics and we've run into a challenge this fall. They are taking a class with some heavy math and will need to both read and write math expressions throughout the semester. For the reading portion, the professor produces materials in LaTeX and I feel fairly comfortable that we can take their source and convert to HTML w/ MathML. This should address the reading needs. The composition of math using Voiceover is where I'm a little stumped... Granted, this student anticipates they will learn LaTeX in the future - they don't know enough now for this to be an option. I've heard the MS Equation Editor has become much more usable with JAWS/NVDA, but I don't know if the same is true for VoiceOver. One solution that has been proposed by the instructor is for the student to write a literal text description of the math expression, which the student has done for an assignment. We wanted to see if there were other options available or if this was the best route to get them through this course until they are able to do more with LaTeX in the future. If anyone has thoughts, ideas or firsthand experience, I'm all ears! FWIW: This student has had some progressive vision loss, which is why they have had less exposure to techniques like this to this point. Also... they have had well-intended instructors who have dismissed them from doing certain aspects of the work in other classes. I mention this because we need to counter the narrative that our disabled students can't do it... or that it's easier to exempt them from doing it... because it puts them at a significant disadvantage as they progress through their area of study. It's awesome that you're working to support your student?s ability to engage fully in their statistics course, especially with both reading and composing math expressions. The scenario you're dealing with is not uncommon, and there are a few approaches that might help bridge the gap until they feel more comfortable with LaTeX or similar tools. Here are some options that could make math composition more accessible for your student using VoiceOver on a Mac: 1. Math Input with VoiceOver in Microsoft Word (Equation Editor) The Microsoft Equation Editor has made progress in terms of accessibility, particularly with screen readers like JAWS and NVDA on Windows. However, on macOS, the experience with VoiceOver remains more challenging. The navigation and editing of complex equations are not always intuitive, and screen readers may not read more complicated expressions correctly?. This means while Word?s Equation Editor could work for basic needs, it's not the most reliable option for complex math on macOS with VoiceOver. You could test it out with the student to see if it meets their immediate needs for simple equations, but I?d recommend preparing alternatives for more complex expressions. 2. Use of MathType MathType is a more robust option for creating math expressions and integrates well with Word and other programs. However, its accessibility with VoiceOver is also limited. As of now, it may require extra steps and isn't considered very VoiceOver-friendly. That said, it can still output MathML and LaTeX, which are more accessible formats?. 3. Overleaf (Collaborative LaTeX Writing) While LaTeX might seem out of reach for your student now, tools like Overleaf could offer a middle ground. Overleaf is a web-based LaTeX editor that works in collaboration with others, allowing your student to get help as they learn. LaTeX is known for its accessibility and is often easier for screen readers to navigate than graphical math editors. Overleaf can allow a sighted peer or instructor to help the student while they gradually learn LaTeX?. 4. Plain-Text Descriptions with a Structured Format As the instructor proposed, writing math using structured text (e.g., "sum of x from i equals 1 to n") can be a useful stopgap. You can establish a consistent way of writing descriptions for complex expressions, perhaps building off MathSpeak conventions, which provide a structured way of speaking and writing math that is screen-reader friendly?. With practice, the student can develop fluency in these descriptions, and it reinforces the idea that they are still engaging fully with the content. 5. MathSpeak and Nemeth Code Though more suited for advanced users or those familiar with Braille, MathSpeak offers a standardized way of describing mathematical expressions verbally, often used by blind or visually impaired users. This can be helpful in establishing precise, screen-reader-friendly communication of math?. Nemeth Code, a Braille-based system for mathematics, is another option, but this would require Braille proficiency and additional training. 6. MathML for Composition While MathML is more commonly used for reading math content aloud (like in your plan for converting LaTeX to MathML), it can also be a potential tool for writing math. However, manually typing MathML might be cumbersome for the student. MathType and other editors can output MathML, but editing MathML directly with VoiceOver is currently not an ideal solution?. 7. VoiceOver?s Web Math Solutions Some web-based tools like Desmos (for graphing) have improved VoiceOver support, though this might not cover all mathematical needs. Similarly, WIRIS (a web-based math editor) has some VoiceOver accessibility, but its ability to navigate through equations and complex math could be limited depending on the student?s level of comfort with VoiceOver?. Long-Term Plan: Transition to LaTeX It?s great that the student plans to learn LaTeX in the future, as it is widely regarded as one of the most accessible ways to both read and write mathematical notation for blind users. Structuring learning sessions for LaTeX over time will provide a powerful skill they can use in academia?. The Overleaf platform, mentioned earlier, could be a good way to gradually introduce LaTeX, allowing real-time preview and collaboration with others. _____ Actionable Steps 1. Assess VoiceOver Compatibility with Word?s Equation Editor: Try out the latest version of Microsoft Word?s Equation Editor with VoiceOver on macOS to see how effective it is for your student. Be cautious of limitations for more complex equations. 2. Use Plain-Text Math Descriptions with a System: If the student sticks with this approach, create a standard format for describing math expressions, possibly referencing MathSpeak conventions?. 3. Explore Overleaf for Collaborative LaTeX Writing: This could introduce your student to LaTeX gradually while giving them a chance to collaborate and get real-time feedback from others?. 4. MathSpeak Training: If the student is willing, explore MathSpeak or Nemeth Code as a more precise way of describing math verbally, though these might require additional training?. 5. Monitor Accessibility Updates: Stay updated on any new developments in VoiceOver compatibility with tools like Word?s Equation Editor or MathType as updates roll out?. Final Thought You're absolutely right in wanting to counter the narrative that disabled students can?t do the work or that it?s easier to excuse them from certain tasks. By ensuring the student is equipped with tools and strategies to actively participate, you're helping to remove those attitudinal barriers. It might be a process of trial and error to find the right solution, but with your support, they?ll gain confidence in reading and composing math. Wishing you and your student the best of luck! Ugh, a Mac and Math? We?ve tested VoiceOver with math when conducting accessibility testing on Libretexts.org, and it does fairly well with math. I believe it may still have issues with SUPER SUPER scripts and SUB SUB scripts, but you may not run into that with stats. (I can?t create multiple super scripts or sub scripts in Outlook, only 1 level is availablestupid outlook). As for writing math, you may want to look into Apple Pages as well as Word. Pages have an equation editor that allows you to type in LaTeX and it appears as math. Export as Word and the equation appears in the equation editor in Word. This is a really simple way to interact with math on Apple. As for Word, you can access the Ribbon by hitting F6 to navigate through the elements, then use tab and arrow keys to navigate groups and buttons. The buttons are read aloud by VoiceOver. Best way to do this is to activate the equation editor, add an empty equation, then use F6 to navigate to the equation element in the ribbon, tab into the groupings and use the arrow key to navigate the buttons. There are only 3 areas the F6 works in: title toolbar, ribbon tabs, and main document. If there is a Fn key, the user must hold that down when using the F1-F12 keys. Would EquatIO would work better for the student for online content? Maybe for Google Docs with math in it? GrackleDocs would be required for exporting Google Docs into accessible formats. There?s also ascii math, tex math, and a few other types of typable math the user can use. I wonder if AI would be able to convert the students equation description into usable LaTeX? Typing LaTeX into Canvas will also produce accessible math. They are using Mathjax 2.7.7 due to language and issues with 3.x. MathType was taken over by Wiris. JAWS and VoiceOver can read it without add-ons, but NVDA requires MathCAT to read math correctly. I use Grammarly and up until this point, have appreciated its suggestions. I had to uninstall it a few months ago as there was a conflict with the Editor tools in Word. I reinstalled it again last week and ended up fighting with it. I found that it kept wanting to rewrite my content so that it was no longer "my" content and no longer "my" voice. My thoughts and creativity were watered down to someone else's uninterested interpretation of my thoughts. Add to that, AI doesn't seem to understand that I am writing tutorials and journal articles related to adaptive technology, keyboard commands and semantic markup or structure, and I've ended up having to undo many paragraphs back to my original text...my meaning and intent were so diluted that they were no longer valid...or sometimes coherent. So, while AI can help fine tune grammar and spelling, it is a dangerous tool that negates the voice of the author. I feel sorry for educators and students who will rely more and more on AI to assist them in their content, especially "immature" authors who haven't found their voices yet and who can potentially have their voices silenced with generic dribble. If you have a University press, please make sure they are aware of the accessibility metadata requirements. IMO the Principles is a great read for everybody! Best George Dear Publishing Community, Please feel free to circulate within your company! As we all know by now, the European Accessibility Act comes into force in June 2025, and it requires that end users and educators have access to information about the accessibility of the publications they plan to purchase or assign to students. With this in mind, we are pleased to announce that the first public draft of the "User Experience Guide for the Display of Accessibility Metadata 2.0" is now available for review and comment. We are seeking feedback from the publishing, bookselling, and library communities, as well as from distributors of digital books. This set of guidelines is an essential read for many in the publishing and distribution chain: The Principles document is the backbone of the guidelines and is essential for everybody to read. The ONIX metadata Techniques and EPUB Accessibility metadata Techniques explain the logic of how the metadata gets converted to meaningful statements that will resonate with end users. Every software developer/coder implementing the presentation in a catalogue needs to study these techniques, but it is also recommended that anyone responsible for metadata in a publishing house review them Comments are most welcome, and we ask that you file a GitHub issue . In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <005a01db0aab$fdbf4e20$f93dea60$@ccctechcenter.org> Hello Ione Like Lucy, I suggest starting with Clipchamp for now. As a screen reader user myself, it appeared accessible on the surface but when I dove in and started to really use it, I found it to not work for me, but the keyboard shortcuts are all there so a user with low vision may have more success. My understanding is that Reaper, an audio-first multi-track editor which is accessible, can edit video as well, but there is a much steeper learning curve. I hope this helps. Applications are due October 3, 2024. Please find full details on the ATHEN website (linked) and below: In honor of one of the founding members of ATHEN, the ATHEN Executive Council is happy to introduce the Ron Stewart Professional Development Scholarship. Ron Stewart was an instrumental figure and champion of access technology in higher education. During his career in higher education, he saw that there were many small localized professional organizations for those working in higher education to support the needs of students, faculty, & staff with disabilities. However, there was no national organization for these professionals. To rectify this, in 2002, Ron Stewart helped to start the Access Technology Higher Education Network (ATHEN) while continuing to work in the field of access technology. ATHEN has flourished into an international organization to collect and disseminate best practices in access technology in the higher education environment as well as present a collective voice for the professional practice of access technology in higher education. ATHEN has become a continual sponsor of the Accessing Higher Ground conference. The Ron Stewart Memorial Professional Development Scholarship purpose is to continue Ron's mission to nurture access technology professionals in higher education. To accomplish this, the scholarship will provide financial assistance to a first-time, in-person, attendee to the Accessing Higher Ground conference. We have been trying to figure out the best way for our math instructors to be able to post their handwritten notes after class so that they are more inclusive. 1AD: It's great that you're exploring solutions to make handwritten notes more accessible and inclusive. I can provide some insight into the possibilities around smartpens. 2HM: I know that there are smart pens that can record notes and convert handwriting to text so we had the idea that maybe this could be a way to make instructor's in-class notes more accessible. 2AD: Yes, smartpens have advanced in recent years and can indeed capture handwritten notes, converting them into digital formats. Some models do a good job with general text, but their success in handling math formulas is another story, which I'll cover below. 3HM: However, I have not worked at all with smartpens so I have some questions: Are they also able to convert math formulas? 3AD: Smartpens tend to struggle with converting handwritten math formulas accurately. While some devices can recognize simple equations, complex mathematical symbols, and notation (especially calculus or advanced math) usually require specialized software or manual editing afterward. A more reliable option for formulas might be a stylus with an app like MyScript Nebo or Microsoft OneNote, which can better handle math. 4HM: How good is the text conversion and how much work will it require from the instructors to go from handwritten to text? 4AD: Text conversion quality depends heavily on handwriting clarity and the complexity of the content. For general notes, conversion is usually fairly accurate but often requires proofreading and manual corrections, especially if instructors use a lot of specialized terms or shorthand. For math-heavy content, the amount of post-editing could be significant. It's often faster to use a tablet or touch screen with a specialized math app rather than relying on a smartpen for seamless conversion. 5HM: Does it require special paper or can they be used on a tablet or touch screen? 5AD: Some smartpens, like those from Livescribe, require special dot-printed paper to work, while others, like the Neo Smartpen, can write on regular paper and later sync the notes. If your goal is to work on a tablet or touchscreen, a stylus might be a better fit than a smartpen, as these allow for more flexibility and don't require special paper. 6HM: Do you have any recommendations for a Smartpen that would work for our needs? 6AD: If you're set on smartpens, you might want to look into the Neo Smartpen or the Livescribe Echo. These are two of the more reliable options for capturing handwritten notes and syncing them digitally. That said, for math-heavy notes, I recommend exploring digital note-taking apps with stylus input, like Microsoft OneNote (which supports handwriting and formula input with a stylus) or MyScript Nebo (which specializes in handwriting-to-text conversion, including math). 7HM: Is this even a possibility or am I wildly naive? 7AD: You?re not naive at all. It's GREAT that you're thinking creatively about this challenge. However, for math formulas, a smartpen might not be the best solution due to the complex nature of the conversion. A stylus/tablet combo would likely be more reliable for accurately capturing both handwritten text and mathematical notation. 8HM: Thanks so much for your help. 8AD: Always happy to share. We have been trying to figure out the best way for our math instructors to be able to post their handwritten notes after class so that they are more inclusive. I know that there are smart pens that can record notes and convert handwriting to text so we had the idea that maybe this could be a way to make instructor's in-class notes more accessible. However, I have not worked at all with smartpens so I have some questions: * Are they also able to convert math formulas? * How good is the text conversion and how much work will it require from the instructors to go from handwritten to text? * Does it require special paper or can they be used on a tablet or touch screen? * Do you have any recommendations for a Smartpen that would work for our needs? * Is this even a possibility or am I wildly naive? The instructor doesn?t change anything about how they teach. It?s a lecture capture system that extracts instructors? writings from the whiteboard and brings them into an interactive sidebar which students can use to navigate the course recording. The lecture handwritings are also available as a downloadable PDF. https://evt.ai/ I recall seeing a transcription service that converted transcribed math equations to mathjax after the course ended. I can?t seem to find the vendor who did this. Anyone else recall who this vendor is? Mathpix works in everything. Old handwritten notes, image equations, whatever you throw at it, it?ll convert into math. Can be exported to Word?s Math Equation Editor, LaTeX, or as mathjax code (LaTeX surrounded by characters). The LaTeX can be used directly in Canvas, which uses mathjax 2.7.7. The chemistry OCR still needs work. Livescribe doesn?t convert to math equations well at this point, although the instructor could speak the equation out as it?s written. This is more of a digital white board for Zoom sessions which can be shared with students. EquatiO, last I heard, required a site license for instructor use. It has a math plugin for Word, making math easier in documents. If you?ve ever used the Math Equation Editor, you know what I mean! Notability and GoodNotes makes math accessible in iOS apps easily, but I?ve never attempted to export into other formats or integrate into Canvas. To: > Dear All: We write to apprise you of the restoration of the Access Text Network (ATN) by the Association of American Publishers (AAP) following the sudden and unexpected termination by the previous host earlier this year. Working with our publisher members and the new vendor, we are preparing to re-launch the ATN portal this week. In re-launching the site, it became clear that rebuilding/restructuring of some of the site's functions would be necessary. As such, ATN users will need to create new accounts when the site is re-launched at https://accesstext.org/. The process is straight-forward (and likely similar to the previous process). Each Disability Student Services Office (DSSO) will create an institutional profile, register the email addresses associated with the DSSO, and provide the requested information in the appropriate fields in the portal. You, on behalf of your institution, will need to accept the Authorized User Membership Agreement, which defines your responsibilities and privileges with respect to access to the portal and the use of the Publisher Works for which you have requested an alternative format copy (this agreement is materially similar to the previous agreement that governed Authorized Users). Upon receipt of your information, the site's administrator will verify your institution and authorize access to the portal. Your DSSO primary contact will receive notification when the authentication process has been completed. Please note that the authorization process will take some time. If you have not received your credentials by early next week, please reply to this email to follow-up. Technical issues will likely arise; we will work as quickly as reasonably possible to address the issues that arise. This has not been a turn-key restoration. We are also happy to connect you with the permissions department of the relevant publisher for any requests that the system cannot yet meet. To facilitate this, please provide all the relevant information regarding the textbook/educational material your student is requesting to this email address (accesstext@publishers.org>). Thank you for your patience as we worked to restore the ATN service. We also thank the DSS offices that offered and provided their assistance to AAP as we worked through this process. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Back in February of 1972, an expansion of the Smith-Fess Act, (establishing the federal vocational training grants) that included a broad and potentially revolutionary anti-discrimination language that would eventually become Section 504 as we know it. ?No otherwise qualified handicapped individual? shall, solely by reason of his handicap, be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.? The Act easlily passed both houses of congress and was sent to President Nixon who pocket-vetoed it along with eight other bills because he had committed to a federal budget cap. In response, Senator Humphrey, Spoke on the Senate floor calling Nixon?s decision ?the most cruel, the most inhumane veto the President ever handed down? Noting that his granddaughter Victoria had Down Syndrome Humphrey reflected on the privilege that allowed his family to take care of Victoria; concluding with ?but many families can?t.? The disabled community followed with direct action. * In Carbondale, Illinois, six students in wheelchairs blocked traffic amid a larger hunger strike. \ * In May Judy Heumann orchestrated protests at the annual meeting of the President?s Committee on Employment of the Handicapped. At the conference, a portion of the delegation symbolically left the room during a speech by Nixon?s daughter, Julie, while 200 disability advocates held a candlelight vigil that night at the Lincoln Memorial. Meanwhile, Congress worked to rewrite the bill, reducing the overall budget but keeping new civil rights passage as Section 504. Nixon signed the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 on September 26th, 1973. ?It is doubly gratifying for me to be able to sign into law today the Rehabilitation Act of 1973--first, because of the good the act will do in helping hundreds of thousands of our disabled citizens attain self-sufficiency, and secondly, because of the encouraging example which our agreement on legislation sets for future executive-legislative cooperation.? Nixon said in his signing message. The full implementation of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 would take another four years of activism, negotiation, and protests.
