scanners for production work they will not typically last very long and they
are extremely slow to scan a page in comparison to many of the office or
workroom grade scanners.  For a good reasonable priced “production”
scanner I would start looking at either the Xerox Documate series: <a

or the Fujitsu FI series: <a

I currently am using both of these units in several of the projects I am

Canon Canoscan  LIDE series (100, 200, and 700) have a very slim profile
and are fast with good quality scans. They run from $63 to $133.  I think
they still come with the Paperport software but it has been a while since I
ordered one. They also run off USB power so you don't have to find an extra
