these scanners extensively. What they found is that there is so much
variability based on the weight of the paper and the size of the books that they
deemed automatic scanners to be extremely temperamental, very unreliable, and
potentially hazardous to their rare books. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

requires a human to turn the pages, but you do not have to cut the spine off
the book. I believe that Stanford and some of the other large four-year colleges
use the ATIZ. Maybe one of those folks can weigh in. I have only heard stories second-hand
and have no direct experience.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
