charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable I found this conversation about PDF accessibility from last September quite= useful, and am hoping to take it a step further: **What services are available at your school with regard to inaccessible, o= r less accessible, PDFs for coursework? We installed Ally in our Canvas LMS and only then discovered the sheer numb= er of inaccessible/less accessible PDFs that are being shared by faculty to= students, most of these assigned readings. While Ally can produce more acc= essible versions of PDFs automatically, our real goal would be to help facu= lty create more accessible documents in the first place. The biggest challenge we face is faculty saying, "I don't have time to do t= his; can you help?" Before we turn on the faculty view of Ally, which could= prompt a large number of faculty members panicking about the inaccessibili= ty of their shared files, we need to determine what level of help we can of= fer. So we're starting to build a process map for analyzing and remediating PDF = inaccessibility for coursework: this will be a partnership between our educ= ational technology unit and the library course reserves group. As part of t= his planning, we'll also need to come up with some definition of what is "g= ood enough": there's no way we can bring all of the problem PDFs up to 100%= compliance, so what is an acceptable first pass at "more accessible"? I would be very grateful to hear how other schools are handling this need. = Do you have a standard process in place to analyze and decide the best appr= oach for helping with problematic courses and files? We're also trying to document the types of problems that can be resolved ea= sily/automatically with Acrobat, with a service called Sensus Access, and w= ith Ally itself, vs. those issues that require more time-consuming remediat= ion by someone trained to do visual checks, write pedagogically sound alt t= ext, etc. David Hirsch, Ph.D. (he/him/his) Director, Educational Technology Strategy Yale University Center for Teaching and Learning 301 York St. | New Haven, CT | CTL 117 203-432-5229 (office) More Information: Online<http://ctl.yale.edu/> | Facebook<https://www.faceb= ook.com/CTLYale/> | Twitter<https://twitter.com/YaleCTL> <https://twitter.com/YaleCTL> _____ From: The EDUCAUSE IT Accessibility Constituent Group Listserv <ITACCESS@LI= STSERV.EDUCAUSE.EDU> on behalf of Damian A. I have also= added my caveat for automated testing for the benefit of the list. Adobe Acrobat Checker: Adobe Acrobat Professional has an accessibility check built into it that wi= ll scan for 29 points of inspection of accessibility. See columns E and F o= f the attached spreadsheet for areas of strengths and weaknesses of the aut= omated checker. PDF Accessibility Checker (PAC 2) http://www.access-for-all.ch/ch/pdf-werkstatt/pdf-accessibility-checker-pac= .html<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=3Dhttp-3A__www.access-2Dfo= r-2Dall.ch_ch_pdf-2Dwerkstatt_pdf-2Daccessibility-2Dchecker-2Dpac.html&d=3D= DwMGaQ&c=3DcjytLXgP8ixuoHflwc-poQ&r=3DnEiIRRBDoGqYx6vCF2KkC_kMoxUW0mxlAvORQ= 8bh4RA&m=3DnFFGEtGZMUz9ejsQ_QC_0jpW4uPqy7KWUcN5qiNdNg0&s=3Dz8z8ef78v4Paw_iv= QYPhbx7dMH7KlhFSA3l00lCcef4&e=3D> This is a far more thorough QA of the PDF against the PDF U/A standards kno= wn as the Matterhorn Protocol. This level of testing may be a bit too heavy= as it will call out issues that have no benefit to current assistive techn= ologies. But PDF U/A is meant to be a gold standard of document accessibili= ty. CAVEAT: Automated testing of PDFs (or Web content) will only catch about 25% of act= ual accessibility defects and cannot be used solely as a claim of conforman= ce to WCAG 2.0 Level AA standards. Manual, human reviews, catch the bulk of= accessibility issues and require the most of the heavy lifting. For exampl= e, run the attached PDF through an automated Acrobat checker and you will s= ee it passes the 100%. But, the document is fully accessibility defects. -- Damian Sian Senior Web Accessibility Advisor Princeton University Office: (609) 258-6288 Pronouns: he, him, his From: The EDUCAUSE IT Accessibility Constituent Group Listserv <ITACCESS@LI= STSERV.EDUCAUSE.EDU> on behalf of Mark Mende <mmende@STLAWU.EDU> Reply-To: The EDUCAUSE IT Accessibility Constituent Group Listserv <ITACCES= S@LISTSERV.EDUCAUSE.EDU> Date: Friday, September 29, 2017 at 10:44 AM To: "ITACCESS@LISTSERV.EDUCAUSE.EDU" <ITACCESS@LISTSERV.EDUCAUSE.EDU> Subject: [ITACCESS] Tools for Checking PDF Compliance Hello Everyone, We are in the midst of a process of assessing what our accessibility liabil= ities are, specifically related to pdfs.
