I'll second what Wink said, and add some additional thoughts.

My take on FlipGrid is that the creators had good intentions, but
that accessibility was an afterthought. Eventually they may get
there, but it could take years now that they are part of the
Microsoft borg. I think the idea behind Flipgrid was to leverage
teenagers' addiction to Snapchat and Instagram, adding educational
elements to turn this addiction into learning. Not a bad idea, but
the devil is in the details.

I spoke with people at FlipGrid about a year ago, and they
implied that their captioning would be based on Microsoft
automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology (they had recently
been acquired by Microsoft). But whether it's Microsoft or Nuance
or some other ASR doesn't really matter. ASR, as Wink points out,
is not equal access. So the delay of 24 hours is not really the
biggest problem (24 hour turnaround for real captions is actually
pretty good), the problem in this case is accuracy.

I don't have a solution at this point that will make FlipGrid
accessible to deaf students, but I do have an alternative to
suggest. Would the professor consider using VoiceThread for the
section with the deaf student? VoiceThread is the same concept as
FlipGrid, but without all the emojis and cartoon stuff. I'm not
sure if that would fly, but consider it as an option if the
faculty and students are willing to be more inclusive. VoiceThread
has integrations that allow you to add real captions. I'm hopeful
that FG will do the same some day.
Subject: [Athen] FlipGrid for Deaf student

Hi,
I'm looking for guidance regarding FlipGrid. I have found a few issues and
I'm wondering if others have devised solutions.
I have a Deaf student enrolled in an online course that uses FlipGrid.
The first issue is that apparently there is a "variable delay" with
FlipGrid captioning. At first, I was told it was just a matter of minutes,
but I saw one FG post that was 24 hours long and it still wasn't
captioned!
What is the solution for this? I don't think a 24 hour+ delay in
captioning is providing equal access!
The second issue is that when someone makes a new post, they have the
option of clicking on options and actually turning OFF captions.
So do I need to send an email to the entire class, asking them to always
leave the captioning on?
Thanks,
Mary Ann
