Make sure the reading is taking place in the Presentation view (F5)...not the slide edit view. Also, it the prof is trying to use plain text dash for a minus sign (that is, not embedding it in a MathType expression), then that is typically not voiced by NVDA
 unless you set it to read all punctuation.</div>
