Need to be able to talk about professional strengths in a setting outside of the classroom? Want to set yourself apart from other applicants for internships and jobs? Are you interested in exclusive internship opportunities? If you answered yes, read on. The C21 Spring Quarter Internship Bootcamp What is C21 Internship Bootcamp? The C21 Internship Bootcamp is a remote, 3 week training program where intern trainees will have the opportunity to work on projects in our student-led start-up gesture. We believe that the most important skills are learned through challenge and failure. This is why we created Internship Bootcamp exclusively designed to help College of Arts and Sciences undergraduates and to provide: * professional environment with safety to fail * personalized feedback * experience working under a manager and having work responsibilities * shift in mindset from school to professional * stories to speak about in interviews or add to your resume "Before Internship Bootcamp, I had no prior internship experience and I was very worried about finding opportunities. This program made me realize that just being a good student doesn't guarantee that I'll be a good working professional, and it gave me the space to develop specific skills that will make me more desirable to any employer." To learn more about Internship Bootcamp and other opportunities click here: https://c21.washington.edu/our-programs/c21-internship-bootcamp Apply Here: Internship Bootcamp Application Internship Bootcamp is exclusively for Arts and Sciences students and will take place online this spring quarter (April 11, 2022 - April 29, 2022). The application deadline is Monday, April 4th at 11:59 PM (PDT). What is gesture? gesture is the intern-powered training start-up within UW's C21 that drives all of its career programming. Everything you see from Internship Bootcamp to C21@Microsoft and @Amazon Externships is done by work from our gesture interns. Can I become a gesture intern? Yes! gesture interns are part of the C21 Internship Program. Students who have completed Internship Bootcamp and are interested in developing their professional experience further can apply and if selected, join gesture as a real intern. Here interns can apply Bootcamp skills and take on new challenges in areas of interest ranging from: * marketing and outreach * data resources and management * program operations * people and culture If you have any questions please contact us at: gesture@uw.edu -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In our past publications, we shared stories of love and loss, of mental health and disordered eating, of coming to terms with one's identity, and of understanding what it means to be a global citizen in the 21st century. If there is anything this past year has shown us, it is that there needs to be a platform for such stories to be shared. Past issues of our journal can be viewed on our website: https://capillariesjournal.com/journals.html. We're looking for students to join our team! Positions available include prose editing, poetry editing, project management/public relations, and graphic design. We highly encourage anyone who is interested in diverse perspectives and stories that can expose the resilience, strength, and compassion in our society along with its flaws, (e.g. discrimination/microaggressions, profiteering, inequities in access to healthcare resources and educational resources, etc) to please apply! The Program on Climate Change can help! If you would like to connect with professional development resources, experts in the field of climate science, and fellow climate-minded undergraduates from across the college, consider joining the PCC Undergraduate Climate Cohort: https://pcc.uw.edu/research/undergraduate-climate-cohort/ For those seeking a personalizable, interdisciplinary, educational program on the aspects of climate science, check out the newly updated Climate Science Minor! https://pcc.uw.edu/education/undergraduate-minor/ News and opinions about earth?s climate and global climate change can be found everywhere in today?s media, but without a foundational knowledge of climate science, it can be hard to separate fact from fiction. The Climate Science Minor aims to give students a strong interdisciplinary foundation in climate science with opportunities to explore policy, energy, and human dimensions of climate change. This minor is for any undergraduate who wants to understand climate change science from a broad perspective. A word about the requirements. We strongly recommend that interested freshmen and sophomores take ESS 201 or ATM S 211 as soon as possible, since they are prerequisites for the capstone course ATM S/ESS/OCEAN 475 which is offered once a year. Students also take one quantitative skills course AND one course from each of four topic areas with opportunities to explore paleoclimate, marine pollution, climate justice, ecology, the Arctic, and more. The updated elective structure allows for more choice in how the requirements are fulfilled. Check out the expanded options! Students are encouraged to meet with the Climate Science Minor Advisor, Miriam Bertram, for course planning. We hope to hear from you soon! -UW Program on Climate Change _____ If you have questions or if you'd like us to present this information in your class, please contact Miriam Bertram at uwpcc@uw.edu . The overall goals of the Sweet/EnTox laboratory are to facilitate and enhance sophisticated in vitro methodologies for research aimed at understanding and treatment of diabetes and cancer. In particular, a fluidic instrument that assesses real time responses of tissue function to test compounds has been developed and is being beta-tested at collaborating laboratories. Continued testing and optimization of the instrument based on feedback are an important focus of the open position, and will ultimately lead to a market-wide product launch. A broad range of techniques are needed to perform experiments with the instruments including preparation of primary and cultured tissue/cells, operation of the fluidics system, and supplemental assays from samples generated by the instrument. Developed methodologies are subsequently utilized in fundamental studies of intracellular mechanisms mediating islet and retinal function. Studies relating metabolism and bioenergetics, ion and membrane transport, mitochondrial function, and cell signaling to secretion of insulin, glucose uptake in muscle and survival of retina, are being carried out to validate the utility of the methodologies and increase understanding of the biology of these systems. The position is particularly well suited to individuals interested in transferring technology to the commercial sector and growing a business, as well as those eager to perform basic research in intracellular regulatory mechanisms of cell function. We are a small but very productive laboratory/company that requires hard work. The effort is rewarded many-fold by gaining multi-disciplinary expertise, participating in fast paced research and development, publication of manuscripts, and daily accomplishments that support high job satisfaction. See the EnTox Sciences website, https://www.entoxsciences.com/ for more information (although it is still under construction) and https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=sweet+i&sort=date for past publications. *Major responsibilities and Duties:* Activities center on performing/optimizing sophisticated real time methodologies to generate data to support product development, scientific investigation, publications and grant applications. Specific Duties and Responsibilities: * Isolation of pancreatic islets, retinal, muscle, hypothalamus and other tissue from rodents using microsurgical and gradient purification techniques. * Culture of islets, tissue and cell lines. * Assess metabolic and functional viability of tissue/cells in flow culture using sophisticated, real-time spectroscopic and imaging techniques. * Testing and characterization of a fluidics systems that measures O 2 consumption with a wide range of tissue including pancreatic islets, retina, hypothalamus, muscle, liver and cultured cells. * Perform biochemical assays using fluorometric, spectrophotometric and radiometric techniques. * Analyze and report experimental results in laboratory meetings and in writing. * Order supplies as needed. * Compliance with regulation of drugs, radioactivity and animal usage. Minimum requirements: Experience in laboratory setting; Bachelor's degree in a life science; willingness to work with rodents; flexibility with work schedule; highly communicative and interactive. Pertinent expertise: Experience with cell culture, harvesting of tissues from rodents and general life sciences laboratory techniques; ability to operate analytical tools such as imaging microscopes, spectrophotometers and plate readers; penchant and aptitude for engineering and machine shop skills. Salary commensurate with experience and education. Start date is somewhat flexible; position is open until filled. *If interested, please send Resume and Brief Cover Letter to Ian Sweet, isweet@u.washington.edu * -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) of UW is thrilled to announce that Mock ER is open for general registration starting TODAY! What is Mock ER? Why should you participate? How do you register? Let's break it down: Being an undergraduate trying to get all those med school prerequisites is tough. There's volunteer work, research, MCAT prep, leadership, not to mention all the classes you need to study for...but the issue we've noticed is we rarely get to see what actual clinical problem solving looks like. So, we've put together a 3-hour representation of real emergency medicine in which you'll be competing in teams of four to triage, diagnose, and treat patients. The catch? While some of the diagnostic tests provided will help you properly treat each patient, there will also be tools that will be useless or misleading to make this simulation even more representative of an emergency room. Collaboration, discussion, and research with teammates will be crucial for success in this competition. Clinical cases used in the event have been curated by physicians and medical students, and you'll have the opportunity to walk through each case with them to go over the proper diagnostics and treatment for each case. Think you're up for the challenge? Registration closes Monday April 25th. Last Mock ER, our registration filled within 24 hours of opening so make sure to secure a spot fast! Registration is guaranteed for the first 72 registrants. To register for Mock ER, please fill out the form below: https://forms.gle/ihG7rtPF9Liv8Tx57 By filling out this form, you commit to being present and active during the entirety of our Meet the Team Event on Friday, May 13th from 8-9 PM (virtual on Discord) and the Mock ER event on Saturday, May 14th from 2-5 PM at the Husky Union Building (HUB), Room 250. PSST, still need help with all those other med school prerequisites we mentioned earlier? Please come join us in Savery Hall Room 156! RSVP here. Abstract: Neoliberalism, Philosophy, and Euromerican Imperialisms: A Chat With AM Weatherford This talk is an interview-style chat between undergraduate student in Philosophy and Computer Science, Andrew Shaw, and doctoral candidate in Comparative Literature, Cinema, and Media, Alan-Michael Weatherford. Together and across an hour, the two discuss the historical trajectories and intimacies shared among neoliberalism, philosophy, and Euromerican imperialisms that are often obscured today. They reflect on the past, present, and future of practicing multiple types of philosophies as they relate to new configurations of imperial and colonial power. What does it mean to practice philosophy in this neoliberal moment? How did we get to the ?here and now?? And how does the historical obfuscation of Euromerican imperialism and colonialism contribute to replicating ongoing projects that subalternize alternative philosophies? -- Email: philsoc@uw.edu Website: https://sites.google.com/uw.edu/philosophysociety/home Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thephilosophysociety/ Attachments area I plan to attend.I'll be there! Thanks! Compensation: $17.85 / hour Project description: The Plant Ecophysiology and Modeling Lab seeks to hire three Academic Student Employees to assist research projects addressing urban horticulture, sustainable agricultural production, and landscape conservation and restoration. We use plant ecophysiological and computer modeling techniques at scales spanning from cell to plant to landscape to ask research questions such as: 1. What impacts do mild and severe drought have on landscape plant performance, morphology, and physiology? 2. How do plant-microbe interactions modify host physiology to improve productivity and resilience to nutrient, water, and salt stresses? 3. How can computer models be used to predict changes in species distribution, phenology, and photosynthesis in response to climate change? These research questions inform greenhouse and field experiments that test how plants interact with their environment and develop computer modeling tools to test research hypotheses. Products from this research are shared via presentation and publication, as well as through community outreach. The Plant Ecophysiology and Modeling Lab strives to do science that is just, fun, and that expands our knowledge of plant functions in the environment. ASE?s will contribute to these efforts by assisting with experiments and model development. Tasks may range from the field to the computer console with movement between research projects and questions. Highly motivated and capable candidates may have the opportunity to continue into the fall to develop an independent research project. Duties may include: ? Install and maintain greenhouse and field experiments ? Collect greenhouse and field data including leaf gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, epidermal patterning, reproductive success, nutrition, plant architecture and aesthetics, biomass productivity, etc ? Use image-based phenotyping and machine learning to measure biomass productivity, root architecture, and pollen germination ? Process dry, wet, and frozen tissue samples ? Reimplement phenology prediction and legacy crop models from Python and Fortran ? Design and implement expanded crop modeling applications including grid-based simulation (i.e. GDAL, GeoArrays) and machine learning interfaces (i.e. SciML) ? Our department offers four graduate degree options. Students in the MS, MS Applied and PhD degree programs then choose from one of six "areas of emphasis." These optional learning tracks allow you to gain specialized disciplinary training-or you can create your own customized degree pathway. View our STUDENT GUIDE for detailed information about our degree options, faculty and student research. Upcoming Graduate Degrees Information Session * Wednesday, April 27, 4:00-5:00pm (Pacific Standard Time) via Zoom: https://washington.zoom.us/j/94323122156 We are also very excited to announce that the GRE has been removed from the application review process for the 2023 cycle for all DEOHS graduate degrees. Message-ID: The UW School of Medicine's Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology & Nutrition in collaboration with EnTox Sciences has an outstanding opportunity open for a Research Scientist in the Sweet Laboratory. We are a small but very productive laboratory/ company that requires hard work. The effort is rewarded many-fold by gaining multi-disciplinary expertise, participating in fast paced research and d evelopment, publication of manuscripts, and daily accomplishments that support high job satisfaction. See the EnTox Sciences website, https://www.entoxsciences.com/ for more information (although it is still under construction) and https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=sweet+i&sort=date for past publi cations. Major responsibilities and Duties: Activities center on performing/optimizing sophisticated real time methodologies to generate data to support product development, scientific investigation, publications and grant applications. * Perform biochemical assays using fluorometric, spectrophotometric and r adiometric techniques. Pertinent expertise: Experience with cell culture, harvesting of tissues from rodents and general life sciences laboratory techniques; ability to operate analytical tools such as imaging microscopes, spectrophotometers and plate readers; penchant and aptitude for engineering and machine shop skills . Salary commensurate with experience and education. Start date is somewhat flexible; position is open until filled.
