We have positions open now and for Fall 2023. SEAL is a great place to get involved in campus research and design new technologies that help our local community, even while practicing self-isolation or social distancing. We provide an extensive online training program for our students to help them participate in campus research. Strong students are given opportunities to publish their work, win international-grade research awards, join or create start-up companies, and receive letters of recommendation for graduate school or career advancement. Many of our students transition into paid positions based on their performance. Students are expected to commit 10 to 15 hours per week. Hours are flexible and can include telecommuting, evenings, or weekends. Project availability changes depending on student interests and lab needs. Highlighted projects are listed below: * UW IAC - Sustainability and Energy Efficiency: The UW IAC offers real-world experience to students interested in learning about energy management and efficiency (link to website). Students will be given hands-on experience working with manufacturers in the Pacific Northwest. Topics include energy savings, waste reduction, sustainable practices, industrial processes, energy assessment procedures, cybersecurity screenings, smart manufacturing, sustainability, resiliency planning, decarbonization, and electrification. You do not need to be experienced to apply, as interested students will be given extensive training on these topics. * SINEW Mask: This research aims to design a new type of face mask that does not come in contact with the skin of the wearer's face. The design matches the comfort of a well-fit bicycle helmet or a pair of glasses while providing the wearer with better safety than industry alternatives. The design is reusable, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly. * Propulsion: This research aims to design a new type of thruster for aircraft propulsion. This effort will result in a new generation of ultra-quiet unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). * Biomedical (Stoma) Monitoring: This research aims to design a 3D imaging tool that can scan and inspect stomas to improve appliance fit and ostomate quality of life. Positions are open for biology and pre-med students. * Operatory Monitoring: This research aims to design a comprehensive methodology for acquiring information on the spatial and temporal distribution of aerosols in a dental or medical office environment. Dental and medical professionals are at risk of exposure to harmful particulate matter when performing routine procedures. Using a network of low-cost, IoT-enabled particulate matter sensors can help keep dental and medical professionals safe. * Gamification AI/AR/VR Software: This research aims to design scripts, software, and applications for the lab and for externals. This effort seeks students interested in WebDev, coding, and scripting. As an example of one of our apps, the ECoS team designs a technical writing assistance software tool to help writers and editors develop manuscripts. To join SEAL and support our research efforts, click the links below and fill out an application: 1. Review our recruitment poster. 2. Visit our website for a list of open projects. 3. Visit our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: The PWR has a writing studio class, English 115, which is a 2-credit C/NC course designed to give extra support for students in thinking through the language aspect of their writing: grammar, rhetorical choices, understanding complex texts, revision strategies, and ways to navigate cultural and linguistic differences. We recommend that multilingual students in a C or W course this quarter consider taking English 115 alongside their writing course. We still have available seats in the following sections: ENGL 115 A / SLN: 14204 TTh 1230-120 SWS 036 ENGL 115 C / SLN: 14206 MW 130-220 LOW 112 We've attached a flyer that you can share with students to give them more information about the class, and below is a brief blurb: ENGL 115: Writing Studio is a 2-credit (C/NC) course that meets two days a week for 50 minutes. This studio is designed for students who are currently taking an English composition class and who want to continue developing their ability to understand and produce writing for academic purposes. This course specifically focuses on the linguistic aspects of writing by working with you to analyze academic texts in order to learn about writing from them, think critically about your grammatical choices, revise papers rhetorically, and learn how to give and receive valuable feedback. While this course has traditionally been provided as a service to students who self-identify as multilingual and international students, we encourage all students interested in further cultivating their language and revising skills to consider enrolling in this low-stakes studio course. Because students don't always get information about English 115 even if it would be important or useful for them to enroll in it, we want to encourage you to let your students know about the course during this first week of registration so that students enrolled in a writing course this quarter might consider whether something like this studio would be a good option for them. Please frame English 115 as an opportunity to build upon students' pre-existing language knowledge-avoiding a deficit approach to students traditionally identified as multilingual. We want to avoid suggestions to take English 115 that are only targeted to students because of their accent/global English use, as well as the negatively racialized connotations that generally accompany such suggestions. We encourage you to promote English 115 to any student you feel would appreciate a class dedicated to experimenting with and thinking critically about language. Thank you and if you have any questions, please email us at pwr-admin@uw.edu. How those ideals contrast with reality as experienced by marginalized others within and without its borders. CHID 250B: Climate Change and the Emotions (A&H, SSc) >From historic fires, floods, and temperatures to species extinction. We are living in a time of tremendous ecological loss. This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to the feelings that arise in the face of the climate crisis, such as ecoanxiety and climate grief, while surfacing other feelings that attend our connection to the natural world including wonder, joy, and love. CHID 250E: Black Sea Ecologies: Politics, Culture, and the Environment (SSc) We will study the dynamics of history, culture, and power in the Black Sea Region. Home to many peoples: Bulgarians, Romanians, Russians, Georgians, and Turks. We will study the turbulence between East and West, Europe and Asia, migrations, diasporas, EU expansion, human rights, and the environmental crises. CHID 250H: Politics, Philosophy, and Public Health (Ssc) Some of the most critical challenges of our current era are related to public health. Whether we are considering police and state violence, COVID-19, racism, or oppression more broadly, they all cause poor health outcomes. These issues are political but a thorough understanding of how to address them must also be rooted in philosophy as many of our epistemological and ethical frameworks are not sufficient. CHID 270A: Black Slavery and Indigenous Dispossession: Twin Tools of Settler Colonialism (SSc) The course takes the dual phenomenon of indigenous American territorial dispossession and African enslavement in the Americas as its point of departure and is guided by a growing body of scholarship that understands dispossession and enslavement as closely entwined tools of European colonizing across the hemispheric Americas beginning in the late 15th century. CHID 390: Bad Art (Ssc) Bad art is assumed to be art lacking artistic skill and complexity. We will think of bad art as referring to a host of institutional histories, practices, and counter-practices that highlight how value in art has often normalized social inequalities. CHID 395: Ethnographic Otherwise (A&H, SSc, W) This course invites students to critically explore and conduct ethnographic research. We begin with conversations about research histories and ethics focusing on the colonial foundations of anthropology and related disciplines. We then consider alternative/decolonial research practices and explore multiple forms of ethnographic engagement such as multispecies, sensorial, and multi-modal work.
