SIAH offers an opportunity for undergraduates to engage in scholarly research with accomplished scholars and peers while earning full-time academic credit. Student participants develop individual, original research ideas related to an interdisciplinary theme and formally present their work at a closing symposium. This year's theme is A Black Sense: Time, Art, and Being, developed and taught by Professors Bianca Dang, Habiba Ibrahim, and Jasmine Mahmoud, and PhD student Chari Glogovac-Smith. Please read their description of the theme, below: Students will interrogate "sense," which includes feeling as a way of knowing, perception, sensorium (across sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell), embodiment, and movement. "Sense" is the route to capacious registers of understanding in Black historiographies, art and aesthetics, critical theory, and futures. Using "sense" as a throughline, this course will explore Black studies across freedom and liberation movements (including abolition), visuality, music, the literary imagination, feminist and queer theater and performance practices, protest, and geographies. To learn more about the theme, teaching team, application process and to sign up for an information session, visit our website. Applications are due March 20, 2023. We hope that you consider applying for this terrific research and learning opportunity! If you have any questions, please email us at urp@uw.edu. The NextGen Public Service Fellowship will support students in identifying a public service internship and/or developing a work plan with their community-based partner organization. We welcome applications from students with ongoing work with community-based organizations and/or those working in local, state, or federal government internships--as well as applications from students who are interested in these positions and need support in identifying or securing a position. Students selected into the program will work with program staff to develop internships in the spring, then complete their community-based work and participate in cohort activities during the summer months. Fellows receive a $5000 stipend for completing an internship of 200 hours (or more) between May and September. Ongoing participation in the NextGen Civic Leader Corps is encouraged, but not required. The application is open now and due on February 28. Please forward this opportunity to undergraduate students in your network who have an interest in careers that serve the public interest and who may not otherwise be able to pursue these internship opportunities during the summer months. Eligibility requirements and the application process are detailed on the CELE Center website. Interested students or advisors can also attend our information session on Monday, February 13 at 3:30PM in MGH 171 or feel free to follow-up with me directly. This program offers the opportunity to make an ecological and cultural exploration in one of the most biodiverse places of the world, the Tropical Andes and Amazon of southeastern Peru. Students learn about the natural history, ecology and conservation of a number of species and habitats along an outstanding altitudinal gradient (from +4,000-200 masl) that goes from high Andean mountains in Cusco to lowland Amazonian rainforest of Madre de Dios. Along these areas, students also learn first-hand about traditional uses of resources by local communities, and the current environmental and economical challenges they face in this unprecedented time of ecosystem degradation. In this program students will have the opportunity to learn field ecology methods and to conduct a short research project in the rainforest. Students will also engage in reflective practices and in exercises that combine science and creativity. The program will run from August 25-September 19, 2023. The priority deadline for applications is 15 Feb, and financial aid resources are available, although these are allocated first to those who apply by the priority deadline. Our mission is to provide a local source of native plants for student projects and restoration sites, to educate students on best nursery practices for sustainable native plant production, and to continue to improve those practices through research and collaboration with students and community partners. The nursery is seeking student interns for the Spring quarter. Interns are expected to devote an average of 9 hours a week to nursery projects. In conjunction with the manager, interns will develop learning objectives based on individual interests and strengths, receiving credit for their school's internship class (ex: ESRM 399, BIOL 399). The interns' time will be split between routine plant maintenance, integrated pest management, nursery infrastructure projects, helping with weekly volunteer work parties, and an individual project. Each intern produces an individual project based around their interests and the needs of the nursery. Projects have included, but are not limited to; data tracking or analysis, experiments, infrastructure improvements or proposals, community outreach and social media, or industry whitepapers. To apply, email a resume and cover letter. Please indicate why you would like to be considered, what you want to learn, and how your previous work experience and/or coursework apply to this position. We have positions open now and for Spring 2023. SEAL is a great place to get involved in campus research and design new technologies that help our local community, even while practicing self-isolation or social distancing. We provide an extensive online training program for our students to help them participate in campus research. Strong students are given opportunities to publish their work, win international-grade research awards, join or create start-up companies, and receive letters of recommendation for graduate school or career advancement. Many of our students transition into paid positions based on their performance. Students are expected to commit 10 to 15 hours per week. Hours are flexible and can include telecommuting, evenings, or weekends. Project availability changes depending on student interests and lab needs. Highlighted projects are listed below: * UW IAC - Energy Efficiency and Sustainability: The UW IAC offers real-world experience to students interested in learning about energy management and efficiency. Students will be given hands-on experience working with manufacturers in the Pacific Northwest. Topics include energy savings, waste reduction, sustainable practices, industrial processes, energy assessment procedures, cybersecurity screenings, smart manufacturing, sustainability, resiliency planning, decarbonization, and electrification. You do not need to be experienced to apply, as interested students will be given extensive training on these topics. * SINEW Mask: This research aims to design a new type of face mask that does not come in contact with the skin of the wearer's face. The design matches the comfort of a well-fit bicycle helmet or a pair of glasses while providing the wearer with better safety than industry alternatives. The design is reusable, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly. * Propulsion: This research aims to design a new type of thruster for aircraft propulsion. This effort will result in a new generation of ultra-quiet unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). * Stoma: This research aims to design a 3D imaging tool that can scan and inspect stomas to improve appliance fit and ostomate quality of life. Positions are open for biology and pre-med students. * Operatory Monitoring: This research aims to design a comprehensive methodology for acquiring information on the spatial and temporal distribution of aerosols in a dental or medical office environment. Dental and medical professionals are at risk of exposure to harmful particulate matter when performing routine procedures. Using a network of low-cost, IoT-enabled particulate matter sensors can help keep dental and medical professionals safe. * Software/Gamification: This research aims to design scripts, software, and applications for the lab and for externals. This effort seeks students interested in WebDev, coding, and scripting. As an example of one of our apps, the ECoS team designs a technical writing assistance software tool to help writers and editors develop manuscripts. To join SEAL and support our research efforts, click the links below and fill out an application: 1. Review our recruitment poster . 2. Visit our website for a list of open projects. 3. Visit our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page. URL: From bioladv at uw.edu Wed Feb 22 19:21:55 2023 From: bioladv at uw.edu (Biology Advising) Date: Thu Mar 7 19:15:11 2024 Subject: [Biostudent] Undergrad Research - Rico-Guevara Lab Message-ID: *Feeding and Pollination Ecology of Australian Honeyeaters* My name is Amanda Hewes and I?m a PhD student in the Biology Department in the Behavioral Ecophysics Lab (PI: Dr. Alejandro Rico-Guevara). I study the feeding biomechanics, feeding ecology, and pollination ecology of honeyeaters, an Australasian group of nectar-feeding birds. I?m seeking undergraduate students to help with a project studying honeyeater-plant interactions starting the week of March 27th. *Understanding the rewards of honeyeater-plant interactions* Animal pollination is often viewed as a mutualism, with both parties receiving some benefit from the interaction. Pollinators are attracted by floral rewards (often nectar) and in the process they facilitate plant reproduction by transferring pollen, but animal pollination is not always successful. One way to reduce pollen loss is to increase the mechanical fit between flower and pollinator; this can be done by altering floral morphology so nectar is only accessible when the pollinator is feeding at a specific orientation and depth, maximizing contact with floral reproductive structures. From the perspective of an avian nectarivore/pollinator, a better fit between the flower and the bird?s bill will presumably increase feeding efficiency. The goal of this project is to determine whether the feeding and pollination efficiency of honeyeater-plant interactions is mediated by the fit between the bird and floral morphologies. I have conducted fieldwork in Australia to collect data on feeding and pollination efficiency for three species of honeyeaters. The goal for this undergraduate research experience is to assist in analysis of that data. Tasks you will be working on include, but are not limited to: - Reviewing camera trap and GoPro footage to identify honeyeater species - Analyzing high-speed videos of honeyeaters feeding at flowers - Taking morphological measurements of flowers and quantifying flower development from photos *What you can get out of this work:* - An introduction to pollination ecology and the ecology of nectar-feeding birds, specifically honeyeaters - An introduction to wildlife monitoring technology and methodology (e.g., remote camera traps) - Experience with machine learning for data processing and with image and video analysis software - Work is easily done remotely with your own computer (but the lab has computing resources if needed!) - Regular meetings to discuss progress and read relevant articles from the scientific literature - Join the dynamic and exciting Behavioral Ecophysics Lab, attend lab meetings, and engage with scientists from around the world - Research credits starting in Spring quarter - Potential coauthorship on a peer-reviewed academic publication (this will be extremely helpful if you?re considering going to grad school!) - Potential to develop your own project related to this subject matter, which we would work on collaboratively together, and to present in undergraduate research symposia *What I am looking for from you:* - At least 4 hours a week of work - An interest in the work (no need to be declared in any particular major) - Consistency in your work and careful attention to detail You will be given training and mentorship for the above-mentioned project, an opportunity to develop your own academic ideas to apply to unique research projects, and the opportunity to be a part of the academic publication process. *If you are interested:* Email me at ahewes@uw.edu with your CV or resume (no need to include GPA unless you want to) and a short message about why you are interested in this project. Don?t worry about committing straight away?you can ask questions and we will figure out if this is the right research fit for you -- *Biology Advising * University of Washington, *BOX* 355320 318 Hitchcock Hall http://www.biology.washington.edu/programs/undergraduate *Zoom drop-in advising hours (10-15 min meetings):* Monday - Thursday 9 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. *Join Zoom Meeting *https://washington.zoom.us/j/97207369544 Advising Sessions via EMAIL, PHONE, and ZOOM. These courses provide a great opportunity for students to learn about and engage critically with topics that continue to make headlines and spark debates. Both courses are open to all students and do not have prerequisites. GWSS 490 is suitable for graduate students and undergrads. GWSS 290 A Special Topics in Women Studies: Body Politics SLN 15160 (MyPlan) This course is an introduction to foundational concepts in feminist inquiry by focusing on the socio-historical positionality of the body in terms of gender, sexuality, race, class, and disability. The course examines systemic power through which bodies are politicized and regulated. We further explore resistance and counternarrative embodied by groups and peoples historically and contemporarily held furthest from justice. How is something so intimate as the body shaped by political, economic, scientific, cultural, and community norms as well as resistance to normative politics? Through varied methodologies, this class examines how bodies are made through cultural systems and structures (e.g., media, medicine). GWSS 490 A Special Topics in Women Studies: Queering CRT SLN 15177 (MyPlan) Instructor video intro to course (Instagram) This course grad/undergrad-level course explores intersectionality via contemporary (2020-2023) cultural battles over Critical Race Theory (CRT) and gender in schools, healthcare, the family, and in state and local government. Race and gender co-create one another, they are not static; rather, social, cultural, and political mechanisms constantly construct, reinforce, and perpetuate them. Students delve into race and gender as ever-moving political processes queering the debates surrounding CRT and gender, disrupting the fictitious distance between the two. Queerly we ask, how do racism and cissexism continue to shape the U.S. sociopolitical landscape? Feel free to reach out with any questions.
