We will bring together threads from health-related fields such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy, health administration, and public health as well as broader fields such as history, economics, public policy, and sociology in order to answer the questions: What role do hospitals play within society and what forces shape delivery of healthcare? Based in London, this program will draw upon visits to important cultural and historical sites to probe how various topics (multiculturalism and immigration, collectivism vs. individualism, military conflict, technologic innovations, and shared civic duty) inform societal capaity towards or away from a "socialized" medical system. Additionally, through observational field study and site visits, students will observe, compare, and critique the current state of health and healthcare delivery as well as outcomes in both the UK and US with an eye towards equity and justice. Also, a quick note that it's currently slated to award HONORS 233 credit (open to non-honors students of course) but also trying to add MED 499 as a credit option, to be confirmed. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This course will be offered Summer Quarter 2024, tentatively July 15-Aug 15. This course is open to upper division UW undergraduate students in the natural sciences who are excited about aquatic ecology, salmon, and field work. There are no prerequisites, but students who have completed some Biology, Ecology, and Statistics coursework will be better prepared for the experience. The AERA class is an academically intensive, full-time research training experience where a team of students works on focused research problems guided by a group of faculty, staff, postdoctoral, and graduate student mentors. Course topics include freshwater ecosystem ecology, climate change, behavior and ecology of salmonids, fishery management, limnology, aquatic food webs, population dynamics, molecular ecology, stable isotopes/nutrient cycling, and geomorphology. Workload expectations vary from year to year, but typically students are expected to produce 1 short paper in addition to daily lectures, short assignments, and daily field research. Students may also choose specific research questions for their own exploration if time allows ? many SAFS students use this opportunity to begin Capstone project research. Students will live and work at the Alaska Salmon Program field stations (Aleknagik and Nerka) in Bristol Bay, AK for 4 weeks and earn 5 credits. The course is co-taught by UW faculty Tom Quinn, Daniel Schindler, and Ray Hilborn, with shorter sections taught by additional UW faculty (Gordon Holtgrieve) and NOAA scientists (George Pess and Wesley Larson). 2024 AERA course application is due February 16, 2024. Your application packet should include a 1 page statement of interest, your unofficial transcripts, and a resume/curriculum vitae. We anticipate a highly competitive pool of applicants. Interviews will be conducted between February 26-March 8. Offers will be made by March 15. Class enrollment will be capped at 6 students. If selected for the course, students are expected to purchase their own plane ticket to Dillingham, AK and supply their own chest waders and stream boots. Room, board, and other course materials will be provided. Check with your undergrad advisor if there are scholarship opportunities to offset travel costs. Send complete application packets and any questions to Chris Boatright (cboat@uw.edu) and Jackie Carter (jlcarter@uw.edu). -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... A little background information on the Biology departmental awards: * We are very fortunate in Biology to have supportive donors and friends of the department, who have generously funded endowments and funds that allow us to offer student scholarships, prizes, and research support. * Biology runs two award cycles during the academic year, one in the Autumn and one in the Winter. * Declared Biology undergraduates are eligible to apply for these awards and scholarships. Undergraduate awards are broken down into three categories: 1. Scholarships: provide tuition support and require demonstrated financial need and a copy of your FAFSA (NOTE: International students are ineligible for scholarships, as your FAFSA will return as "no need".) 2. Research Awards: support research expenses and registration/travel for conferences. An itemized budget table and budget justification with dollar amounts must be submitted for consideration. 3. Prizes: these have no expenditure restrictions and can be used at the student's discretion, but have specific requirements (see Ingrith Deyrup-Olsen Award and Franco Award) Detailed information can be found on the Biology Undergraduate Awards website here: https://www.biology.washington.edu/programs/undergraduate/awards. If you are applying for multiple award categories, please include all materials for each category. Students are free to apply to as many awards as they are eligible for. Winter 2024 awards applications will be due by Monday, January 29, 2024 at 4:00pm. Late applications will not be accepted. Questions? Please contact Joyce Antonio, joyceca@uw.edu. This new major is a dynamic collaboration of multiple UW departments and housed in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Global Literary Studies (GLITS) introduces students to works of literature from around the world and from all eras of human history. Drawing on the expertise of faculty from across the Humanities Division, GLITS offers students a rich array of courses that reveal the importance and lasting impact of various forms of imaginative writing and speech. All GLITS courses are taught in English and work with literature in English translation. Skills developed by the study of literature include the ability to effectively communicate in oral and written form, to activate one's imagination and creativity, and to engage with varied points of view, ways of thinking, and lived experiences. GLITS is a flexible program of study that provides students many opportunities to customize their degree. You will find information about the GLITS major at this link Global Literary Studies If you would like to discuss this major with an adviser, make an appointment with Advising appointments at the Humanities Academic Services Center Humanities Academic Services | Padelford Hall A-002, University of Washington, Seattle, WA 98195-4330 Unsubscribe jcharltn@uw.edu Constant Contact Data Notice Sent by nsisko@uw.edu powered by [Trusted Email from Constant Contact - Try it FREE today.] Try email marketing for free today! Dr. Paul Nghiem?s Lab is a moderately sized, diverse team with basic, translational, and clinical research projects. We study Merkel cell carcinoma: an uncommon, frequently lethal skin cancer associated with immune suppression, UV exposure, and the Merkel cell polyomavirus (see www.merkelcell.org). Working in this lab environment provides extensive opportunities to interact with scientists, physicians, and clinical research team members. We are seeking a motivated, enthusiastic undergraduate to assist with general lab duties and translational/clinical studies. Many of our projects involve contact with patients and other healthcare providers. Your duties would involve collecting data from medical records, maintaining an accurate and up-to-date database, ordering tissue samples from outside pathology labs, stocking the tissue culture room, and performing administrative tasks. There may also be the opportunity to work under other Dermatology faculty members to support their research projects. Our lab?s mission is ?to improve cancer patient care by leading Merkel cell carcinoma research and fostering the next generation of compassionate health care and scientific leaders?, and our lab values include honesty, balance, compassion, impact, humility, enthusiasm, and curiosity. We are seeking applicants that resonate with our mission and embody these values. Students that are organized, communicative, collaborative and have a strong desire to learn about the biology and clinical management of cancer are encouraged to apply. We are looking for applicants who are sophomores or freshmen, and we will prioritize students who plan to go into healthcare or biomedical research. Prior research or clinical experience is advantageous but not required. A minimum of ten hours per week is required. Students who can make a two-year part-time commitment during the school year and can work 20-30 hours per week during the initial summer will be prioritized. Currently, some onsite work is required, though certain tasks may be performed remotely. Our lab is in SLU at the UW Medical Center, a 20-minute shuttle ride from the main campus. The Undergraduate Research Assistant position offers hourly compensation equal to the Washington State minimum. Qualified applicants should send a cover letter, resume, and unofficial transcript to the MCC Team (mccteam@uw.edu) with the email title ?RA Position Nghiem lab, {your initials}.? We will be accepting applications until February 26, 2024. At EarthLab, we seek to share stories that promote empathy, understanding and collaborative action towards a more just and sustainable future. With that in mind, we redesigned our newsletter to showcase our efforts to take equitable action on climate change through our four action areas: 1. We invest in research co-created with community 2. We build capacity for more environmental research and training? 3. We mentor and train the next generation of climate leaders 4. We create new connections across UW and the wider community? Going forward, we'll be featuring bite-sized stories that highlight the diversity of our partnerships and elevate the voices of the people at the heart of the work at the intersection of climate change and social justice. We invite you to engage with our newsletter, share your thoughts, and join us in promoting understanding and positive change. It pays $7000 for 12 weeks, and there are seven different labs looking for summer fellows. Fellowships can start either in May or June (which is super helpful since UW is on the quarter system). Housing is not provided, but fellows starting at the same time often find housing together or through Airbnb, etc. A car is also required since public transportation is not available. It?s a really great program where every intern has their own mentored research project and gets to present a poster at the end of their fellowship. https://science.sandiegozoo.org/opportunities/summer-student-fellowships Best, Allison ? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
