Yesterday afternoon you may have experienced a change to your UW Microsoft sign in. This was a result of a planned change to our Duo integration with UW Entra ID. The expected sign in experience is documented at https://itconnect.uw.edu/tools-services-support/it-systems-infrastructure/msinf/aad/authn/cloud-with-duo-experience/. Step 3 in that walkthrough represents the key place where you may see something different.

How can I authenticate to my Office 365 applications?

You should expect to see Duo as the authenticator of choice for access to UW Office 365 resources.

If Duo appears as the authenticator on your device, proceed to logging in as you normally would.
If you receive a prompt to use Microsoft Authenticator or Outlook Mobile app to authenticate, you can click "I can't use my Microsoft Authenticator/Outlook Mobile App right now", and continue to the prompt to use DUO.
If you do not see the prompt that says, "I can't use my Microsoft Authenticator/Outlook Mobile App right now" wait 30 seconds and the prompt will time out with a "We didn't hear from you" message. You will then be given the option to choose "If you can't use an app right now get a code a different way."
Selecting this option will present you with a selection "Approve with Duo". This will trigger the normal DUO authentication prompt and allow you to authenticate your application.

Why am I not seeing Duo prompt?

Users who previously registered an Entra authentication method (like Microsoft Authenticator) will now, by default, be asked to sign in with that method instead of Duo.

If you are being promoted to use an authentication other than Duo, you can click to say you can't use that authentication method to get a full list of options, including Duo. You can also choose to remove an Entra authentication method, to return to a default Duo experience, by logging into your security settings using this link https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info.

Duo is the preferred MFA (Multi-factor authentication) provider at the UW, but there are some use cases which require other MFA solutions.

Why am I being asked to sign in repeatedly?

If you are being asked to sign in constantly, something isn't right and there should be something that can be done to help.

When Microsoft detects a change to the security surrounding your sign in, it forces a fresh interactive sign in which generally results in a reusable cached token, so you don't have to constantly sign in. The change made yesterday qualified as triggering security event. Some applications may require additional steps to complete the sign in process. If that's the case, you may see a cycle of interactive sign in prompts or need to restart the application. A little patience usually will resolve these kinds of issues, but do reach out for assistance if needed.
