If you know of any similar efforts that have happened or are underway, please let me know! (I am specifically interested in larger geographies, not just urban land inventories). I am also looking for examples of public land leases or other forms of public land access, for farm to institution. This is a project in partnership with the Oregon Farm to Institution Collaborative . So far, we are loosely defining institutions as hospitals, universities and schools, correctional facilities, and any other larger place-based public or quasi-public organization that has congregate meals, cafeteria, or similar. Please email any links you think are relevant, and many thanks in advance! I will include all relevant references in a final report, likely coming out in fall 2024, and shared via the Oregon Farm to Institution Collaborative . One example is state leasing programs. Most states lease land to farmers/ranchers although only a few give preference to agriculture. The best programs we?ve found are in Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Hawaii?s Agricultural Parks Program is especially noteworthy although directed toward small, diversified farmers not Farm to Institution per se. Most examples that come to mind are small and focused on community gardens and farms. But there are some larger examples like Boulder CO which leases a lot of land to farmers and ranchers, but only a small fraction is suitable for fruit and veggies: bouldercolorado.gov/osmp-agriculture-program. The National Park Service developed the Countryside Initiative which leases land to farmers in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. nps.gov/cuva/learn/historyculture/farming-in-a-national-park. Another thought would be to explore land banks like this one on Nantucket Island: nantucketlandbank Finally, you also might look to Canada for examples: long-term-public-land-leases.
