I agree. The setup described above is how I do it also:
ISPimap=>fetchmail=>procmail=>local dovecot folder
And then to read it, I just use my email client to read my local Dovecot
IMAP server. Advantages:
1) I'm not reliant on any one email client
2) My filtering rules are independent of the email client
3) Local Dovecot server is rock solid and very fast
