My admittedly fuzzy impression is that software that uses actual MP3
compression has to get a license, but as long as you are using valid
software, you don't have to worry about using MP3 itself. There are
plenty of other compression formats, some open source, but people
confuse the issue by using MP3 as a generic term, when it's not.
