A variation of this topic thread came up last month and the discussion is

You are not going to get all the same functionality with the basic HTML
interface as you get with the standard Gmail interface.  Right now, the
standard Gmail interface relies on various AJAX type interfaces for instant
messaging, online status, etc. and these user elements are not fully
accessible to screen-readers.
