At Montana we capture about $10,000 per year from the Student Computer Fee disbursements in order to purchase and maintain assistive technology. We use this for any number of things – 30-seat licenses for screen readers and scan-and-read utilities, magnification software, Dragon, captioning software and laptops. we’ve used it to buy Victor Streams, netbooks set up as reading machines and for all of our equipment used in alternate media production – ABBYY, desktops, etc.

HI Ron and all,

For the most part, our captioning and AT utilized by departments is purchased via general funds. However, we have a student-lead committee here at UW-Milwaukee that does RFPs from across campus for technology funds. Our office (in conjunction with the University Tech folks) has written and received funding for a number of projects - including a smarttechnology pilot project, portable CCTVs, an updated Accessibility Center computer lab, etc. Minimal staff support is received this way - often only to implement the purchase and training.
