[Athen] Question -- exams for low vision student

Hi Colleagues,

We have a number of low vision students in our student population. Most prefer to take an exam using a video magnifier, or in some cases, a handheld magnifier. One of our students prefers to have the entire exam enlarged onto 11x17 inch paper. In the past, she has asked for 18 point font, but the resulting font size can vary depending on the original file. Complicating this matter is math notation on the exam, so even if the base fonts are 18 point font, the superscripts and subscripts are not.

Many faculty prepare exams the day before the test, so we have a limited time frame regarding conversion. Do you have any guidelines you follow regarding exam accommodations for low vision students? We are trying to help the student move toward magnification devices rather than enlarged print.

Thanks for any ideas you might have.

Kathy
