[Athen] alt text on images when using mail merge to email in MS Word

Our admissions department is sending out emails using the mail merge feature in Microsoft Word with the merged letters being "Sent to Email".  The document has a separate graphic for the header and footer with text imbedded in the graphic.

I can add alt text to the images when I create the document in Word, but when I perform the mail merge and send the merged documents to email, the alt text appears to get lost.  Am I missing something?

If it is not possible to have the alt text go with the email merge, do you have suggestions on other ways to do it - other than dropping the images altogether?
