[Athen] Microsoft Office Accessibility

I'll throw a couple of cents into the conversation on this.

In alt-text production if the student wants/needs an (accessible) e-pub
text, our conversion steps include putting ALL of the metadata into the word
doc and converting through CALIBRE to an epub or other e-book output. This
allows a copy saved as MSW document with metadata, and a CALIBRE-converted
epub book with metadata. In the case of alt-text conversion, the question of
covering copyright info is imbedded in the metadata if we do it this way
(ISBN, title, author, publisher, copyright date, edition, etc.).

A couple of extra reasons to include it, not just for google searching, but
for student searching within the book as well.

Is it required for accessibility? No. Does it make it easier or searcher to
find the correct version of the book? Yes. Additionally, it helps fulfill a
copyright notice as well.

Hope this small contribution is useful.

Blessings,

Wink

Hi Jason,

My opinion is that it's not so much that it makes a document inaccessible,
but rather, I see using a title as best practice and good design for digital
content like a Word Doc and provides more context to assistive tech users
(specifically screen readers). This context might be helpful especially if
someone named a file something vague like syllabus.docx or document.docx
(which in itself does not represent best practice.)

I am actually not sure why the Accessibility checker does not alert for that
issue...but when a Word Doc is made into a PDF, PDF accessibility checker
will for sure pick up on that omission.

Is anyone using LabArchives? Ian curious about how the IOS version compares
to the Windows version in terms of both accessibility and overal
functionality.

Good morning,
We are having a bit of a discussion about a point brought up about
accessibility in Office. I have been told that not adding a meaningful
title in the properties of a document makes that document inaccessible. I
don't mean naming the file meaningfully or adding an appropriate heading
structure, of course you should do this. I mean going to "file" - "info" -
then clicking the "add a title" field. By not doing this, is a document
actually inaccessible? If this does actually ruin the accessibility of a
document, any thoughts on why it doesn't come up in the accessibility
checker?

Either I am not searching right, or there just isn't a lot of information
out there on this (probably the former). Your expertise is much
appreciated.
Thank you!
