Hi, Tess.

I’d add Oscar Senior app for iOS and Android phones and tablets to the fabulous list of resources shared so far.

A friend of mine with macular degeneration has also found the magnification apps on her iPhone and iPad very helpful for viewing paper documents.

You might also look at Inky<https://www.otherinbox.com/inky/> as an email client. I haven’t used it but it’s on my list of apps to check out.

Melanie

For seniors who need a simplified computer interface, simplified interface for commonly-used software (email, contacts, audio/video chat, photos, news, games, etc.), and alternative access (touchscreen, mouse alternative, etc.), consider these options:

I've tried all but the last one with senior clients — they have their various pros and cons. Most have a “monitor” mode where another adult can remotely keep track of the senior’s activities and even provide assistance.

I’ve also used a MacBook in Simple Finder mode with a senior client, and added a remote assistance app (Join.Me, Zoom, etc.) so that I could assist and train their caregivers as needed.

Some companies have specifically adapted computers for easier use by seniors — for example:

I’m sure there are others out there, too, as well as companies who have adapted Android tablets, etc.

Hope this helps,
Shelley

I realize this may be off-topic and possibly a duplicate query for all of
you as I cross-posted to ITAccess/Educause.

Can you recommend technologies that seniors can use to stay in contact?

For example, if there might be vision issues (such as reduced visual field
due to macular degeneration) combined with some memory issues ‹ making
navigating a complex email client difficult?

Or, best practices for cell phones or text messaging for clumsy fingers?

Thank you!

Tess
