[Athen] Resetting Smart Pens

Erik,

That may work, too. I am just doing what I was told by the LS rep. I felt confident he was telling me the right information.

I initially connected with them as we had a pen that was not being recognized in LS Desktop. As we were talking, he tried to get me to move to Echo Desktop and I told him why I didn’t want to. I had connected with them on a previous issue of when I saved the notes, not all of the audio was being exported with the PDF. He looked at my previous troubleshooting ticket in their system and told me I did not get the help I needed (and that was true so I gave up trying to use Echo desktop) and he wanted to make sure this was fixed and we were helped properly.

He told me the reason there was a problem was the audio in the notes was not being totally cleaned off the pen so all notes with that same book number was overlapping with the current notes and that prevented it from being added to the PDF when trying to save their notes for the student. We do not keep track of what book went with what pen. I felt we were cleaning them off so it didn’t matter. He did say that if the pen was cleaned properly, that it would not matter. Now that we know the saving to PDF will work, I still like LS Desktop.

I will try your process a few time to see how that works but for now I am sticking with what he told me. We have so many students wanting their notes and I don’t want to mess them up.

On PC, I don't require the flash utility. Unless Echo Desktop has changed (entirely possible!) I go to tools>smart pen> reset, a factory reset is performed at that time, everything is erased and the tutorial pages and recipe recording are automatically reloaded.
You can right click and archive notebooks if you prefer, and then right click and delete from the archive column but I find a factory reset is faster.

I've made the mistake before, of doing a whole batch using the nav menu, going to paper replay, delete all sessions. This method is quick but the problem is, the recordings are erased but all pages are retained. Oops.

On mac< I do use the Flash utility, hit left ctrl click on customer service, click on reset and yes I've talked to customer support already, and then the reset proceeds.

Its historically been really simple. We will see when I go to do the Fall batch if things have changed a bunch and then I'll check back here.

All Best,

Erik

And, I learned using the flash utility also resets the time on the pens. I have been doing this part manually with the settings in the back of the book. The flash utility is much fast even though I find it fun to do. But we have 36 pens and it is better to have it done in one shot.

Thank you for the info about the Smartpen Flash Utility. Previously, I have been clearing each of the Smartpens. I archive all the notebooks/audio content. I then click on the Reset option in Echo Desktop to clear the profile from the smartpen. I think the Smartpen Flash Utility should be faster than doing this manually.

So when you archive the notebook, you're able to have Echo Desktop save it as a PDF? I'm setting up a process for our student workers to do this since I'm a screen reader user and the app has accessibility issues.

Robert,

Since some of our students want their notes after the quarter is done, we use the Livescribe/Echo Desktop to extra the notes into a PDF format with the audio and then send the notes to the student through Canvas. We do not give them the notes from the notebooks as there will be no audio with them. We also use this application to archive and save the notes.

We keep the notes in the archived format and throw the actual notes away and reuse the book until it is done. This way we have copy and proof of what student had and what quarter/year. Plus, we also have the sheet that they signed and agree to the terms of use. We try to keep thorough records. I rename the notes before archiving them to the students name, quarter and year, then I archive them and then I do the flash utility cleaning.

I do not know if not archiving first makes a difference. Before we started using the flash utility, I would always archive them as that is how I thought they got totally cleaned off. And, since we do all the archiving and managing of the pens, we have done that from the beginning. Since just recently, I found out we need to use the flash utility, too, to make sure it is totally cleaned off. And, this is what the rep told me to do, first archive, then use the flash utility.

Is it necessary to archive it first, though? We have a statement that informs students that, upon turning in equipment, it gets wiped, so they're responsible for archiving themselves. In fact, the student worker computers only have the smartpen flash utility installed. Should this be OK, or do I have to install Echo Desktop and make archiving the pen the first step before wiping it with the flash utility?

Oh Robert, I had an extensive email/phone call/ remote assistance to get this right recently. It took some time to get an answer to this problem. I finally found the right person at Livescribe and he spent a significant amount of time helping me.

After you archive the pen, you use the Smartpen Flash Utility and completely clean it off. It only cleans off the pen it does not reset it to factory. It is called master reset but it won’t delete anything but the contents. I found lots of audio left over on the pen even though I archived it after each quarter. So, this now cleans it all off.

Once you start the utility, and the pen shows up (in blue), use the Ctrl key and click on the green “Firmware and all the Letter/numbers are (red box).
[cid:image009.jpg at 01D5AA8B.FCC1C0F0]

Another window will pop up and ask if you want to master reset, click Yes. I also found this step will also set the time right for you if that needs to be changed.

The utility application is not updated but the firmware is updated through their server so he said it did not have to worry about what utility to use. I would say try to find the latest version, though.

Now, on some pens, it wanted to me install an update again so I do that too and that is normal.

I hope this helps? This has been a problem for us for some time and I am so happy I finally found the right person to help me get it right.

Hello, I found some instructions on the Livescribe web site to do this, with a firmware update utility, but they do not seem to be the most accurate.

What is the best way to reset an Echo Smart Pen once it is returned by a student? By this I mean clearing all data and resetting to factory defaults.

Thanks,
Robert
