[Athen] LinkedIn Learning

Hello all,

I recognize that this is not an accessibility topic, so sorry for the
digression!

The LinkedInLearning admin at your campus can ask that it be set to either:
a) force users to connect their LinkedIn Learning account to their LinkedIn
profile
b) allow users to connect their LinkedIn Learning account to their LinkedIn
profile (if you do not choose to do so immediately, you are given very
frequent reminders asking you to connect and there are empty boxes on the
LinkedIn Learning home page that remind you that there would be content
recommendations there tailored to you if you just connected to your
LinkedIn profile
c) not offer the option to connect the accounts

The LinkedIn reps strongly encourage you to have the users connect their
accounts: their argument is that it's better for the users to get
individualized recommendations and to be able to display on their LinkedIn
profile that they have completed particular LinkedIn Learning courses. They
would very much like users to have entered skills into their LinkedIn
profile as they say that it will help employers find them by using keyword
searches.

However, connecting the profiles means that the use of LinkedIn Learning is
then under the generic LinkedIn terms of service for regular users, not the
specific-to-LinkedIn Learning terms that universities have individually
negotiated as part of the contracts.

Linkedin's position is that if the user has a LinkedIn page then they're
already covered by the generic terms for that service, so it's no big deal
if their usage of LinkedIn Learning also falls under those generic terms.

My position is that the institution entered into a contractual relationship
with Lynda/LinkedIn Learning with negotiated terms that do not change for
the period of the contract, while LinkedIn can change the generic terms of
service at any time. I don't feel comfortable offering LinkedIn Learning as
a university-endorsed service without having some more control/knowledge
about the terms of use.

I asked to have the ability to connect the accounts turned off.

Best,
Jenn Stevens (she, her, hers <https://www.mypronouns.org>)
