I hope it does help, Robert. The page is very usability friendly both being uncluttered by distractions, and simply laid out. I like how they use both image and descriptive words. The webpage is also pretty accessible.
Best,
Cath

Hi Cath, thanks for this link. I do explain to the student that they have to drag the icon exactly as it shows on their screen, so there's some break in the communication because I've had multiple students mess this up, but I can do it just fine with the keyboard. I'll see if showing them the image on this page is helpful at all. Thanks again.

Robert

The biggest challenges I have run into with students installing on Mac is the “Lock” that shows up and has to be unlocked: it requires that they enter their computer user name and PW.
As a support suggestion, I have linked texthelp’s own support page for first time installs, https://support.texthelp.com/help/readwrite-for-mac-installing-readwrite-mac-for-the-first-time.
Hope you find a method that helps students do this without a problem (grin).

Best regards,
Cath

Hi all,

I am blind and use screen readers. Those of you who are blind also know how complicated it can be to describe to sighted people how to perform certain tasks, since we don't always know what icons look like--or at least I certainly don't.

I have been unsuccessful at describing to students how to install apps on their Mac - particularly, Read and Write. When I open the disk image file, I arrow over to the .app file, perform a command C, then go to the Applications folder and perform a command V to paste it.

For sighted people, they would drag the app file from the disk image package to the applications folder. It even says, in the Read and Write DMG, "Drag our beautiful icon to the applications folder." I have had multiple students, however, fail at doing this and instead make an alias in the applications folder. Of course I can't see what they're doing to correct them.

In the old times, when we were allowed to meet in person with students, I would just take the computer and complete the install myself. Now, however, I need to figure out how to explain this.

Anyone have any tips?

Robert
