[Athen] Google Chat or Slack?

I’m a big fan of Slack, after holding out for a while. We use Google as a team communication tool with my department at Texas A&M, but I use Slack in all other settings because it’s so much more feature rich.

Slack’s focus issues in the mobile app are a pain. For VoiceOver users, it’s less flicking through elements and more dragging a finger and navigating items that way. That said, I rarely use the mobile app – and find the desktop app a great experience with NVDA and JAWS.

I dislike the lack of threaded conversations and direct mentions in Google. Yes, you can create new groups based on contacts and groups … but if a contact shares something that I want to respond to directly or that necessitates a thread, you have to put it in the main conversation feed. That gets overwhelming. You can’t directly @ reply a user in a conversation either, which is a bummer.

Just my two cents. Hope the insight is helpful!

Thanks,
J

Focus issues abound for VoiceOver users in the Slack app. For instance, when I am reading a conversation, I am frequently thrown back up to the top of the conversation, so I either have to scroll back down or close and open the conversation again. It's really annoying, and I intend on sending feedback.

Good afternoon!

We are looking into chat applications for our virtual conference. What is your experience with Google Chat or Slack as a user with disabilities? Which platform do you prefer? I have tested both and found some accessibility issues with both platforms. Google Chat interface seems simple whereas Slack has a lot more features to navigate through.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Have a great weekend!
