[Athen] Issue with zoning a pre-book marked file within Kurzweil

Hi Charlotte,

Kurzweil has its own version of "AbbyyFineReader light" OCR & zoning
built-in. Anything done prior to uploading to Kurzweil is stripped
automatically.

The tools that are available in the built-in "AbbyyFineReader light"
version in Kurzweil are not as sophisticated or precise as found in the
standalone version of AbbyyFineReader or any other optical character
recognition program such as OmniPage Pro that we have available to us.

Another thing that you should keep in mind, any color overlays that exist
in text boxes & superimposed on any other images/charts/graphs etc. with
embedded text cannot be stripped out in Kurzweil — the layers (of color)
are not removable and neither are these layers transparent. In other words,
if there are any text boxes with color overlays, the text behind it cannot
be read by Kurzweil, and you cannot remove the color layers to get to the
text. The consequence of that is that the text in the text boxes is behind
the colored layers and it must be retyped.

If the final output must be in Kurzweil, start in Kurzweil and remember to
proofread carefully to make sure all the text is captured from those boxes
with color overlays.

You will get a much cleaner tagged & accessible PDF if you use the regular
version of AbbyyFineReader or OmniPage Pro and provide the student access
to the book with a different text-to-speech reader or a screen reader such
as JAWS or NVDA.

I hope this is helpful information. Hopefully other people who use Kurzweil
can add to this. Let us know if you have any additional questions.
