[Athen] Options Other Than Dragon with Math Talk?

One option you may want to consider is using the Windows math dictation capability with Microsoft Word. It is a relatively new capability which many people do not know about, but I don't know how useful it is in real like. Murray Sargent wrote about it in this blog post https://devblogs.microsoft.com/math-in-office/math-dictation/

In another post by Murray, he states "Math dictation is another math input method for blind and sighted users alike. Imagine, you can say 𝑎² + 𝑏² = 𝑐² faster than you can write or type it! Math dictation can work with all devices, computers, tablets, and phones."
See https://devblogs.microsoft.com/math-in-office/officemath/

I would be interested in hearing back from anyone who tries this out with a student to see if it has any merit.

Hi all,

I am working with a quadriplegic student who needs to take a math course next quarter. The student typically uses a stylus held in their mouth on a tablet to type and do some homework.

We are looking into getting the student set up with Dragon and Math Talk to be able to do math verbally but this will take some time as the student does not yet have a computer equipped with this tech.

What other solutions have you used for students with similar barriers? Are there other tech options out there that we aren’t thinking of? Do you provide a scribe for homework for this kind of situation?

Thanks so much in advance!

Warmly,

Ali Steenis
