[Athen] Adding SWIFT bana template - error

It looks like the SWIFT add-in is expecting a particular BANA Braille template file (named “BANA Braille 2017.dot”) in your user templates folder, but either it isn’t there, or Word/SWIFT can’t see it. Here are a few steps you can try:

 

1.	Confirm the file’s location

 

*	Browse to C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\ and see if BANA Braille 2017.dot actually exists there. If not, that’s why SWIFT can’t find it.
*	If you do see the file in that folder, try renaming it slightly (e.g., BANA Braille 2017-old.dot), then reinstall or re-run SWIFT to see whether it places a fresh copy.

 

2.	Reinstall or repair the BANA Braille template

 

*	If you’ve previously downloaded or installed the BANA Braille 2017 template separately (outside of SWIFT), try re-downloading it from its official source. Ensure you place it in the Word templates folder (the path above) or wherever SWIFT expects it.
*	Sometimes, specialized templates come packaged with certain accessibility/Braille transcription tools. If there’s an installer for the BANA template, run it to make sure all necessary files go where they need to be.

 

3.	Check Word’s template settings

 

*	In Word, go to File > Options > Advanced > File Locations (exact steps vary by version).
*	Look for “User Templates” and “Workgroup Templates” paths. Make sure the path there matches where you’ve put the .dot file. If not, you can edit it or move the .dot file to the correct folder.

 

4.	Run Word with admin privileges

 

*	Occasionally, Word doesn’t have permission to access certain files in the user’s AppData folder. Close Word, right-click its icon, and select “Run as administrator,” then load SWIFT to see if that bypasses the error.

 

5.	Contact the SWIFT or template provider

 

*	If none of the above gets rid of the missing template warning, check for documentation or a knowledge base from the organization that develops SWIFT (or from BANA itself).
*	They might provide an updated .dot file or instructions if your environment (e.g., Word version or OS version) requires a different setup.

Hi all,

 

I am running into an issue with accessing the bana templates in Word after I've downloaded SWIFT. I've looked up the error online and have not come across anything. Exact wording of the error is as follows: "SWIFT: Unable to attach the BANA template, as the file does not exist:", followed by the location of the file in my file explorer. I've been chasing my tail all morning trying to get this sorted out so I'm thankful for any guidance or advice you can provide!
