[Athen] Scanner Hardware -- slight twist: what model for a blind student?

Hi all:

I'm in a wonderful and unique position of being able to purchase a scanner
and Kurzweil 1000 for use by a blind PhD student; this equipment will be
set up in the building where they work.

Any recommendations for non-professional grade scanners, preferably of the
Canon variety since its software apparently works a little better with
K1000? I'd like to have high resolution and a document feeder, at a
minimum.

Suggestions?
