[Athen] Alt text locked? on MS Word for Mac 2011

All of a sudden when I try to go into a table and enter Alt text I cannot enter anything it is “locked” for want of a better word. I have never had a problem and have not chanegd anything to my knowledge as far as settings – does anyone know how to fix this? I am on a mac running Office 2011 – OS X 10.10.5
