[Athen] Offline Captions for Downloaded YouTube Videos

Hi Allison,

I just saw this post and figured I would share how we have handled this.
Like others, you¹ll have to decide how concerned you are with the
legality/illegality of downloading these videos. We have elected to go the
route of accessibility over copyright in these situations.

As for tools, we use Free YouTubeDownloader
(http://download.cnet.com/Free-YouTube-Downloader/3000-2071_4-75219434.html
) to pull the videos. I have also used a method where you simply add the
word ³kiss² in the URL just before the word YouTube (e.g.,
https://www.kissyoutube.com/watch?v=YQ6RdOcwPFI) and press enter. This
will bring up page that gives you options for how you want to extract the
video and/or audio. The latter option can be hit or miss, but is really
convenient when working.

As for the captions file, I have had success with a tool called Google2srt
(https://sourceforge.net/projects/google2srt/?source=typ_redirect). I have
had issues getting the Windows version to work, but the Mac version works
well.

Once you have the SRT file, you could use Handbrake
(https://handbrake.fr/) to create the offline version (by adding an
external SRT file). The captioned video can then be viewed using VLC
player.

Best of luck!
