[Athen] Guidelines for captioning video

We at the DO-IT Center include audio description as well a captioning for all of our videos (see http://www.washington.edu/doit/do-it-videos). This is not, however, a standard practice at the University of Washington campus-wide.

Is anyone including audio description when they are doing captioning? From my understanding they are to be one for one.

We are trying to get a feel for what guidelines are out there in terms of captioning videos for courses.

1. Does your institution have a budget for captioning?
2. If so, are there limits on how much video can be captioned per course?

Any information is appreciated!

Are you talking about captioning proactively as part of a UDL model? Or captioning for accommodation requests?

For the later, there is no limited budget, we pay what we need. And we caption whatever the student needs, so no video limit.

Thanks Krista- I am mostly curious about pro-active captioning.

We do not have a line-item budget for captioning, as both responsibility and authority are delegated to schools and units. Each unit, under counsel from central, sets their own criteria for purpose, types and amount of videos to be captioned, and builds it into their production and service budget.

Hello all!

Some of you outside California have expressed interest in attending one of my three-day trainings for sighted folks who want to learn to read braille.if only the trainings were closer!

Well for some of you, the time for that closer training is now! We have two opportunities coming up this fall to attend the braille training outside of
California: one in Utah and one in Florida.

A flyer for the Utah training is attached. The location is at the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City, UT, September 27-29, 2017. The Utah training is free. For more information or to register, please see the link
below:

https://tinyurl.com/BrailleBootCamp

The Florida training is being conducted in conjunction with the National Braille Association conference, in Orlando, FL, at the Embassy Suites Lake Buena Vista South, October 25-27, 2017. The NBA training requires conference attendance, which is $360 (before October 1).

For more information, please see the NBA website:

https://www.nationalbraille.org/professional-development-conference/

For those of you in Florida and, especially those of you in Utah (since that training is completely free!), please share this information with interested colleagues. Thank you!

Our Accessible Technology Services obtained a pot of money for a pilot. This is how it was marketed ?
Free video captioning, research study
Take advantage of the opportunity to have UW-IT?s Accessible Technology Services caption your highly viewed UW video presentation at no charge, making it more accessible to everyone. To qualify, videos should be used multiple times in one or more courses, or provided for the public on a department?s website. Instructors and units may apply online<http://engage.washington.edu/site/R?i=8zbkQzMPa4KVzMWPMlgByA> for this limited, fall and winter quarter offer. Faculty interested in participating in a research study, using multiple captioning options in their class, can check that box on the application.

I am mostly confident they did not captioned everything for everyone who submitted a request. The idea was to give departments/profs some free captioned material that they could reuse. And hopefully garner support for departments to captioning materials. No idea if this will be an ongoing thing but I sure hope so!

Subject: [Athen] Guidelines for captioning video

We are trying to get a feel for what guidelines are out there in terms of captioning videos for courses.

1. Does your institution have a budget for captioning?
2. If so, are there limits on how much video can be captioned per course?

Any information is appreciated!
