[Athen] Mac Text to Speech ("Read Aloud") no longer available?

It is one of the tools I give students who have a Mac. It will read whatever is highlighted, as long as it is text-based. It’s a quick way for them to get through a short piece of reading, without having to open Kurzweil. We are a Kurzweil campus.

Hello:

You wrote: You can still use the Speech functionality in macOS via the right-click menu or by setting up a hotkey command (under System Preferences > Accessibility > Speech).

So is this just for reading text that the user has highlighted? I have students with Macs and I just advise them to use Read and Write features for this, but if this is better/easier in some circumstances, I would like to advise them on it as well.

Thanks,
Robert

I found a few links resulting in a 404 error (namely around macOS Zoom) just recently. The pages I was linking to were Apple Support pages and heavily referenced Sierra and High Sierra. Given the recent release of macOS Mojave, these may have been removed.

You can still use the Speech functionality in macOS via the right-click menu or by setting up a hotkey command (under System Preferences > Accessibility > Speech).

There are also the accessibility shortcut keys page that references other tools in macOS:

I suspect there will be additional information at some point.

Take care,
Sean

When working with students with Macs, I’ve always sent them a link to the instructions for using their Macs to read short pieces, in addition to giving them Kurzweil. I met with a student today, and went to send the link I usually use, and…it’s a 404. And all my searching on google only brings up years-old instructions for using the technology.

Has Apple suddenly removed this functionality from Mac OS? I can’t believe that they would have, but it appears to be gone. Anyone have any information to say otherwise?

(I am not talking about VoiceOver)
