[Athen] athen-list Digest, Vol 165, Issue 10

Hi Vicki,
Here are some resources we have used to learn JAWS, NVDA and ZoomText for testing purposes. They are all free and very informative.

You have a choice as to how to engage with the material in this lesson. The key concepts are always addressed in the text. If you need more info or learn by watching, the videos and resources are great supplements. The "Learn NVDA<https://www.afb.org/blindness-and-low-vision/using-technology/assistive-technology-videos/learn-nvda>" tutorials have been designed to allow a person who is entirely new to NVDA, to independently install the program and learn how to use it.

Freedom Scientific offers training and certification on using JAWS and ZoomText<https://support.freedomscientific.com/Services/TrainingAndCertification/Certification>. You can set up an account and do all of the training and exams for free and you have the option to purchase the certificate once completed.

I hope some of the info will be helpful.
Take care,
Marinette

Hi all-

I'm curious if anyone is using Sutori (tool where students can create collaborative timeline presentations) and what your accessibility experience has been with it? Is there a more accessible alternative?

Thanks,

I know! Usually I'm the one giving keyboard commands!

I don't do this often and can't find the answer on any of the Microsoft
sites or unhelpful community forums.

I want to take an app that is in the start menu and put it on my desktop. If
I press the AppKey on It (either in the Start menu or in the Start menu
tiles), there is no option to add it to the desktop and I can't find a
keyboard command to do this. I can drag it with the mouse, but I'm sure
there used to be a keyboard command to do this.

I can't find a way to open the file location to use Send to Desktop or
Create Shortcut on Desktop.none of my "go to solutions are working.

Help!?

Cheers, Karen

If you open the search field and type in the app in question, it will show
up. Right mouse click on the app (shift f10) and select "open file
location". You may then right mouse click on the actual .exe file and send a
shortcut to your desktop.

Not one of the options anymore. I have Pin to Start, Pin to Taskbar, App
Settings, Rate and Review and Share.

If I go to my C drive and search for the app, it doesn't show up. I'm trying
to put Snip & Sketch on my desktop.

In checking some of the other applications like it does have the Open File
Location but Snip & Sketch replaces the Windows Snipping Tool and has to be
installed from the Microsoft Store.

The old Snipping Tool does have Open File Location but it looks like none of
the Microsoft Store apps do.

Cheers, Karen

Hi Karen,

Follow the instructions on this webpage

https://winaero.com/blog/desktop-shortcut-store-app-windows-10/

It is similar to what Larry suggested, the Microsoft store Apps, just live
in a different folder. Once you get into the Applications folder, The snip
and sketch tool has a create shortcut option in the right click menu.

If you need further help, let me know.

Thankx,

Joe Humbert

Microsoft Apps are hard for people with and without disabilities to deal with. They don?t work like normal programs

One Case: Most pre-install Microsoft apps cannot be removed (uninstalled) without using PowerShell commands and even that doesn?t work sometimes. (I like to strip Windows 10 down to the bare minimum when I do a clean install and only install the Apps and programs I?m currently using).

If you open the search field and type in the app in question, it will show up. Right mouse click on the app (shift f10) and select ?open file location?. You may then right mouse click on the actual .exe file and send a shortcut to your desktop.

I know! Usually I?m the one giving keyboard commands!

I don?t do this often and can?t find the answer on any of the Microsoft sites or unhelpful community forums.

I want to take an app that is in the start menu and put it on my desktop. If I press the AppKey on It (either in the Start menu or in the Start menu tiles), there is no option to add it to the desktop and I can?t find a keyboard command to do this. I can drag it with the mouse, but I?m sure there used to be a keyboard command to do this.

I can?t find a way to open the file location to use Send to Desktop or Create Shortcut on Desktop?none of my ?go to solutions are working.

Help!?

Cheers, Karen

Seems like more and more, the editions of textbooks students are requesting are brand-new, some with copyright dates of 2020.

I'm finding this frustrating because they are not on Bookshare, they are not on learning ally, they are not on the ATN.

And they aren't even in print for me to scan for the student because they are integrated in to the LMS.

Are others struggling with this trend as well?

I currently have over twenty requests pending for books that I just cannot get!

All these students want audio, because they are brand new and haven't learned to use access technology yet. I wish the high schools would actually teach them to use modern ebooks with access technology because all they know how to do is stream music on their phones!

My stats for completed requests this quarter are dismal and it is very concerning!

We also love VoiceDream Reader here. Blind and sighted alike love it once they learn it on mobile devices.

For blind students on Windows, hands-down the best epub reader is Qread:

https://q-continuum.net/qread/
never looses your place because it auto-saves bookmarks every minute.

K1000 also does well importing epubs these days.

And I hear great things about Read And Write?s epub integration!

If she is using an Apple device, Books does well with epubs. Also, if she is using an Android or Apple mobile device, Voice Dream Reader has been a big hit with my students.

Hello all!

We have a student who likes using ePubs and has been using them in MS Edge.

She's asking about ePub apps. So I'm turning to the best resource around to find out what favorite ePub apps that have the TTS function you suggest to students.

Many thanks for any thoughts!

Our college tests all software that is requesting to be renewed or purchased. Our department is responsible for this task. Even though we have the basic skills using both JAWS and NVDA, we want to improve our skill set. We are both sighted users of these two products.

We are seeking anyone who is willing to do training for us. Both basic and advanced training. This can be remote training using Zoom video conferencing, in person, using email or phone calls.

We hit certain walls that even though a YouTube video and other documentation tells us we are doing things correctly, we can't get it to work the way it is documented. For example, with NVDA, you can use the quick heading key of H to navigate headings. In a Word document, neither myself nor my colleague can get this to work. It just types out H. And, if I initiate the NVDA elements list (Insert F7) while in a Word document, it opens google instead.

We have Windows 10 and use the latest versions of NVDA and JAWS 2019.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thank you.
