The Livescribe Echo 2 smartpen, successor to the original Echo (launched in 2010, discontinued in 2020) is finally available for pre-order, with delivery expected in February. (Parent company Anoto said the delay was primarily due to chip shortages.)

So, what about features? The big advantage of the original Echo and the new Echo II is simplicity of use: record continuous audio and automatically sync handwritten notes to that audio using just the smartpen and special microdot paper notebook – no other devices needed. Other Livescribe pens like the Symphony, Livescribe 3*, and Aegir* (*discontinued) required linking to a separate device connected via Bluetooth to do the audio recording, as those pens don’t have built-in microphones. "Simple" is an important feature for students who already struggle with notetaking.

Other features added to the new Echo 2:
Upload notes-&-audio to either a Mac or PC (like the original Echo) or to the Livescribe+ <https://us.livescribe.com/pages/livescribe> mobile app
Noise-cancelling to significantly reduce paper scratching sounds
Built-in Bluetooth for file transfer.

I’ve been so looking forward to this for myself and for my students – just pre-ordered one!
