[Athen] Any Capti campuses out there?

Regarding Capti:

We are not a "Capti school" per se, but my office provides individual Capti accounts to students with accommodations for alternative formats. Capti has some downsides (what program doesn't?), but overall we've been very pleased, and it offers a lot of independence, organizational support, and control to students.

These elements have been particularly useful:

*Having an individual Capti account allows students to keep all their readings in their Capti "library." We can upload book files to our Capti admin account & give students immediate access. (They don't have to come into our office & pick a USB or fiddle around with file exchanges). The books just appear in their library.

*Students can independently upload a variety of formats from various sources to their Capti library. They log in from the web--no additional software required.

*Capti's mobile app is quite good & easy to use. Students can access everything in their library & much of Capti's web functionality.

*Control of the adaptable display appearance is terrific -- good enlargement capabilities, color options, font, text display (such as showing just a few lines at a time), etc.

*We can't view the content that students upload to their own accounts, so they have some privacy. But we can tell the last time a student logged in, which is helpful for suspending accounts that aren't in use.

*Easy integration with Bookshare. This is a big plus for us. Students can independently download from Bookshare into their personal Capti library & then manipulate appearance, voice/speed, etc. as needed.

*An individual account is extremely affordable ($29.99/year for premium version), so it's quite feasible for a student to purchase & continue using Capti after graduation. I think this is very important.

*Handy notetaking/study tools. In my experience, the students who use these tools LOVE these tools.

All that said, we just purchased several stand-alone Read&Write licenses because there are things it can do that Capti can't.

One negative about Capti. They redesign the layout and organization of the program with far too much frequency, sometimes making unannounced changes or hiding crucial tools and doing away with useful methods of organizing content. It's really frustrating (really, really, really frustrating). They launched the last big revision last August (yes, August) without updating their own training materials to reflect the changes.

If any of you are in discussion with Capti about purchasing their product, maybe you could mention this concern. Some of the changes they made are fabulous -- like adding dictation tools -- but some changes seem arbitrary and undermine the useability of the product (imho).

That said, their tech support folks are wonderful, and they have been responsive to fixing some of these problems.

I hope that's helpful!
Christina

Hi all,
I would suggest that you carefully analyze the features of both. In my
opinion, they have significantly different features. Especially when it
comes to writing support (CAPTI doesn't have any).

It may be helpful to make a list of the features that your students are
using/or what support you WANT them to use, and then look to see which
product best fits your needs.
