[Athen] [EXT]Re: EPUB to HTML issues

Hi,

I understand that extracting the EPUB as XHTML is a solid approach, but the publisher files can be segmented into many different files, e.g., one file per print page. Normally one chapter per file is common, but not always. For this reason, I would suggest using the TextHelp EPUB reader, which “should” present a coherent interface to the publication. Happy to help off line if useful. We also run epubtest.org, where the EPUB reading systems are tested for accessibility.

Best

George

Have you tried reading the page using R&W’s browser plugin? I believe that’s a better experience reading web pages than using the desktop app.

If I recall correctly, you have to highlight content within the web page when using the desktop app, not so with the browser plug-in.

Best,

Joshua

Try adding another step to this process and see if/how it works: Following George's e-pub to XHTM, which you report as read sufficiently well by JAWS and NVDA but not in R&W, take the XHTML file and SAVE AS PDF. R&W reads PDF files OK. Not sure if any extra revisions might be necessary, but this extra SAVE AS PDF step might be enough to produce a file that R&W can read well enough for your purposes.Let us know if this works.

Yes, that is how I extracted the files. While JAWS and NVDA reads the files fine, Read&Write does not.

Thanks.

Hello,

A few thoughts:

It could be how you extracted. You can rename .epub to .zip and unzip it. The content documents are in XHTML and should open in any browser.

Secondly, if the EPUB is from a source that protects the files, they may be encrypted, which of course would cause problems.

Hello all,

Twice now I have extracted the HTML files from an EPUB book but Read&Write was not able to read it. I tried opening the files in Chrome and Edge with no luck. I was able to get the reader in Edge to read the content and my screen reader would read it fine, but not Read&Write. Any ideas why?

Thanks.
