Yes, my understanding is that the main publishers no longer were willing to financially support ATN which was why it has ended. Georgia Tech may have been providing some of the funding but it was mainly supported by the larger publishing houses.

I'm no legal expert either, but I do feel as though ATN was a bit different, as it seemed to be a collaboration with publishers.

I feel as though this particular issue has more to do with library lending than it does with ADA protections, but I agree that it doesn't bode well for the future of access to information as a whole.

However, this type of ruling does still directly impact us. Being able to digitally access library materials is a great resource for book conversion, cutting down time required for scanning or being able to acquire better quality in the case of course readers.

Pardon my ignorance, but is there any decentralized (non-institutional) entity that works to conserve and protect these types of access-related tools that are so useful to our work? I personally am feeling the loss of several excellent resources over the last 10 years, and much seems precariously perched on the shoulders of large (and sometimes fickle) institutions.

Hi all,

I wonder if the judge’s reasoning behind this 2023 lawsuit brought by 4 big publishers<https://www.npr.org/2023/03/26/1166101459/internet-archive-lawsuit-books-library-publishers> prompted Georgia Tech to pull funding for ATN. While the lawsuit does not target disability services directly, the judge noted that the case for the defense rests on “the notion that lawfully acquiring a copyrighted print book entitles the recipient to make an unauthorized copy and distribute it in place of the print book, so long as it does not simultaneously lend the print book.” The judge sided that there is no legal foundation for this kind of notion.

Obviously we have disability rights laws on our side here but this kind of ruling makes me nervous for the future of how alternative formats work functions in our institutions.

Thoughts?

Warmly,

ATN's website is down now. It seems like the service is just gone. Feels like a major loss.

Greetings,

I just received this email. Have any of you heard anything related to this? I haven’t worked in higher ed disability resources long enough to remember a time before AccessText existed. I’m not looking forward to alternate format work without it.
