Social Work/Culture Work: Building Healthy Communities Through Participatory
Arts and Cultural Interventions

Summer Term A 2023

Instructor: Carrie Lanza, clanza at uw.edu <mailto:clanza at uw.edu>

Are you curious how the arts and cultural interventions can be employed to
address health inequities, treat trauma, and facilitate collective healing?

This class is a good match for those training and or interested in the
community-engaged arts and cultural work as well as for students of the
helping professions. It is appropriate for graduate and upper division
undergraduate students. For other students, including students from Bothell
and Tacoma, email instructor for permission.

Description:

This multidisciplinary 3 credit course will explore arts and culture-based
interventions in social work and health promotion from a variety of
perspectives. We will look at both historical and contemporary examples of
this work; consider the literature emerging in neuroscience regarding how
producing art "heals"; discuss the mechanics of facilitating community
participation with respect and cultural sensitivity and explore partnerships
between health and social service organizations with artists and cultural
organizations. This course will be hybrid: there will be 5 weekly class
meetings as well as asynchronous weekly assignments. Course will include a
field trip, guest speakers, experiential activities and more!

Schedule: Summer Term A, Thursdays Evenings, 6-9pm (June 20-July 19). Class
will meet in person weekly on Thursdays for lecture, discussion and
activities in person. The other 2.5 hours of class time will be dedicated to
local field trips and asynchronous time to work on your individual projects.
This class is accelerated and is a 3 credit class in 4.5 weeks rather than
the typical 9 weeks, so students should plan accordingly.
