Nature of Organization:

The Biology Greenhouse is a 20,000 Ft2 teaching and research facility which houses a large and diverse plant collection, supports research, teaching and outreach activities for the department, campus and local communities. We had over 10,000 visitors last year, including Uw classes, and public visitors. Greenhouse staff provide year-round care for the plants housed in the greenhouse.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of Biology greenhouse staff, the greenhouse assistant is responsible for assisting with plant care including watering, weeding, plant propagation, as well as general facility maintenance, and helping host public hours. work hours are flexible between 8 am-5 pm., with availability year round on weekends, some holidays & academic breaks.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicant must be a UW student with a Federal Work Study award verified through the Office of Student Financial Aid before an interview can be scheduled. Enthusiastic plant-loving individuals with some course work in Plant Sciences, Botany, Ecology or Horticulture. Hands-on experience working with plants preferred. Plant identification knowledge is desirable. Position requires sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this job, including lifting 40 lbs., working in a warm environment and standing for long periods of time. Must be available to work 4-6 hrs per weekend, along with some weekday hours.

Educational Benefits:

Along with everyday job skills, this position will provide hands-on experience in greenhouse plant care, plant production, plant ID, plant history and ecological importance of plant pollinator relationships.
